EMPLOYMENT HISTORY
• Camp America June – September 1990 working with children in America, I worked as
an Auxiliary Nurse on a summer camp looking after children who were injured and helping
out the qualified nurses with routine insulin administrations and other medical based work
which the nurses needed help with at the camp.
• Heigera Housing Mickley, Derbyshire, England. September 1990- 1992 Working with
young adults in the community with Mental and physical disability. Aim of the project was to
allow people to live independently in the community and bring people out of institutions. The
project closed down with lack of funding so closed in 1992.
• LPNS Nursing Agency, Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, England .1993-1995
Worked part time at this nursing agency whilst I was in University qualifying as a nurse. This
gave me valuable experience which I was able to use when I qualified in 1995.
• Neurology Department, Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham,England. 1995-1998 This
was my first job as a qualified staff nurse. The ward consisted of neuro medicine and
neurosurgery where we cared for patients with spinal and head injuries as well as patients
with neuro medical diseases. This was a challenging post and I was promoted in 1997 to a
senior staff nurse giving me responsibility for other members of staff including writing the off
duty for the team and management responsibility for junior members of staff in my team. I
left this role in 1998 as I felt I wanted to expand my knowledge and further my career.
• Premier Prison Services HMP Lowdham Grange Nottingham England. 1996-1999 (sister
post) The post gave me much experience working as a nurse practitioner. The service was
nurse led where we triaged inmates and ran clinics including health promotion such as healthy
eating and stopping smoking, well man clinics such as asthma and diabetic. We also offered
pre and post test counselling for HIV and Hepatitis as well as dealing with medical and
psychological emergencies. I also worked alongside the medical officer and provided some
much needed teaching for both staff and inmates.
• Heanor Memorial Hospital, Heanor, Derbyshire, England.1998-2001 (Ward Sister) My
role here was as a ward manager running Community Hospital ward where we cared for
patients with lie limiting illnesses and the elderly who needed wound management, diabetic
care and general health checks and respite care for their families. This role gave me much
needed skills in Management of staff and mentoring staff as well as increasing my knowledge
and understanding of disease management and my introduction to Palliative Care which I
discovered was where I wanted to work.
• Coalville Community Hospital, Coalville, Leicestershire, England. 2001-2004 (Ward
Manager) This role was a promotion for me after working as a sister the transfer to
management where I was totally responsible for patients, staff, students and a budget was
huge. I enjoyed the challenge of developing myself professionally into a new role and the
challenge of working with staff recruiting, managing and developing them. The Ward mainly
cared for patients who were terminally ill and I enjoyed this work enormously, we worked
very closely with the Clinical Nurse Specialists and I knew whilst in this job this was what I
wanted to do. As a team we worked effectively and efficiently and the team was always an
enjoyable experience for me. We developed members of the team so that we could run
exercise classes on the ward and also changed part of the ward into a Palliative Care Suite so
that the patients’ relatives could stay at this very important time. This role developed me
enormously and enabled me to have the confidence and experience to apply for the Clinical
Nurse Specialist role.
• Hillingdon Primary Care Trust,Hillingdon,Uxbridge, England . 2004- July 2010 (
Clinical Nurse Specialist In Palliative Care). My role as a Clinical Nurse Specialist is vast.
I hold a caseload of patients all with Specialist Palliative Care needs who have complex needs
both symptomatically and psychologically. We work very closely with the Multi Disciplinary
team both in the Community and Hospital settings to ensure the patient and their family
receives the level of care and input they require to allow them to remain in their preferred
place of care (mainly home). We assess their needs and implement care and symptom
management where needed, I regularly assess the usefulness of any treatment implemented
liaising with the General Practitioner, Consultant in Palliative Care and the District Nursing
team to implement changes and monitor as needed. A large part of my role involves
Psychological care. I spend a lot of time talking with patients and relatives in their own home
this allows them to be open and express their needs and wishes which is important at this
trying time The basis of Palliative Care is to care for patients with an end of life disease and
provide adequate psychological support and symptom management for these patients and
their families in their preferred place of care (usually home). We work in a Multi Disciplinary
team to ensure good communication and, documentation takes place ensuring the patients’
journey is seamless. It is also important to consider Bereavement care and whilst I have been
in my role I have spent much time researching this and trying to improve the service we
offered in Hillingdon. We have been successful in doing this with no financial backup and
now our Clinical Psychology department linked with a Clinical Nurse Specialist run a weekly
clinic which enables families to get immediate support and information which is vital at this
time. Whilst in this role I have completed an audit into preferred place of care and we have
altered the way we work to improve the home death rates. I provide much teaching in the
Hillingdon area both to staff members, university students and the general public. We have
also implemented a support and training programme in all the local Nursing homes which
enables them to have the skills, knowledge and confidence to enable patients to die in the
home rather than in the hospital. This is being audited at this time but has already shown to be
working well. I also walked across the Sahara Desert In February 2010 for Macmillan Cancer
Relief raising £25,000 for the charity I worked for for 6 years. This was a lot of fun and I
worked hard to raise the money and organising this event and many more to raise the money
we needed.
