PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE SUMMARY
Mr. Crognale is an Environmental management practitioner with over 35
years of experience. His client responsibilities are varied - these
include providing feature articles dealing with emerging environmental
issues for Business and the Environment; and identifying value
opportunities for environmentally regulated companies to green the
supply chain across their business enterprise. He was formerly a
compliance inspector evaluating companies' environmental, health and
safety compliance programs, which forms the basis of his current
consulting practice. His specialties include focusing on emerging
environmental considerations in energy consumption, CSR, branding issues
improving upon business systems and practices that interact with
environmental regulatory compliance and environmental management systems
(EMSs). His recommendations are focused on correcting bottom-line risk
deficiencies, including risks associated with employee health and safety
issues in the workplace. His work also focuses upon identifying client
opportunities for decreasing their environmental footprint, including the
incorporation of prudent business practices. For those clients seeking to
bolster the effectiveness of their ISO 14001 systems, he has utilized his
expertise to incorporate key recommendations into their ISO 14001 systems
to gain across-the-board savings, such as recommending motion sensors for
lighting, recommending additional solid waste recycling streams, and
recommending alternative means to decrease energy consumption across the
board - all tenets of a solid sustainability program, wrapped within an
effective ISO 14001 program.
In his capacity as an EMS implementation and regulatory compliance
specialist, his focus is to provide practical solutions to root cause
issues related to environmental health & safety and quality implications,
including identifying areas of risk to both employees, the organization
and the environment - all of which can adversely affect the business and
potentially its neighbors via negative press. His areas of expertise
include: developing EMS programs to enhance end-user value, such as
identifying cost-saving and material substitution opportunities,
evaluating energy consumption targets into the EMS, environmental/ISO
14001 auditing, developing training programs for EMS implementation and
auditing, providing business enterprise risk management recommendations,
and providing consultation related to workplace health and safety issues
under OSHA. As a Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering, he also
relies upon his ability to review design blueprints and as-builts to help
identify areas for improvement, whether during design, or post
construction, such as retrofits to take advantage of alternative energy
sources as appropriate and energy and water-saving options.
AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION
He has extensive knowledge and experience in creating operating
procedures at the management and worker level (work instructions) in
accordance with ISO 14001 requirements, adding enhanced linked features
to facilitate adherence to these work documents. His training programs
have built upon this work to create effective lesson plans to convey the
effective use of following such procedures and adhering to ISO 14001, and
for those clients also implementing OHSAS 18001 systems, dovetailing his
recommendations to mutually benefit both management systems. Among the
areas in which he has provided solutions to clients, he has developed and
enhanced the environmental management systems of organizations by also
focusing on health, safety and quality recommendations as risk
mitigators; providing specific tailor-made EMS training and auditing
programs for clients in the manufacturing sector; and offering advice on
how to improve upon their business model for increased efficiency and
reduction of waste streams. As part of his recommendation regimine, he
also conducts ES&H internal audits to help identify additional areas for
improvement within these systems. As a columnist for BATE, he utilizes
his acquired skills as an environmental investigator and his own
proprietary tools which he has honed for this assignment to provide in-
depth analysis and interpretation of data from his research in the
articles he authors for the newsletter.
