Qualifications
I spent the first six years of my professional career at a small
environmental engineering consulting firm in the foothills of Golden. It
was my goal to provide site specific, pragmatic solutions for environmental
and subsurface resource problems. I supported my clients with applied
consulting services in the design, application, and communication of goal-
oriented hydrologic, geologic, environmental, and engineered solutions. The
foundation of my problem solving approach was the collection and
quantitative and qualitative analysis of site-specific data. I am very
comfortable applying established engineering practices as well as 'state of
the art' quantitative analysis techniques.
Project Engineering
A brief list of my project engineering duties and experience includes:
. Technical writing, researching, and production of closure and post
closure documents;
. Developing remediation/control systems;
. Training new employees in office and field procedures;
. Performing site specific health risk assessment and evaluations;
. Developing standard operating procedures;
. Data analysis and evaluation;
. Performing Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments and site
characterizations;
. Assuring all reports and permits comply with all local, state, and
federal regulations; and
. Working with representatives of state and federal agencies.
Field Engineering
A brief list of my field engineering duties and experience includes:
. Installation and maintenance of ground water monitoring wells;
. Construction oversight and management;
. Collecting ground water and soil samples;
. Quality control and quality assurance; and
. Assuring field procedures are followed and ordering change orders when
needed.
Project Management
A brief list of my project engineering duties and experience includes:
. Cost versus benefit analyses;
. Subcontractor organization and management;
. Leading office staff through technical decisions and report
preparation;
. Tracking and modifying project budgets;
. Managing the efforts and work load of staff technicians and verifying
their results;
. Providing technical and managerial support for numerous projects at
once; and
. Communicating with clients to define the scope of work, develop the
optimal path forward, work through difficulties encountered, and to
present project deliverables.
Projects Completed
As a project engineer, my responsibilities spanned all aspects of site
evaluation and/or remediation projects from "cradle to grave". I have
helped successfully close a RCRA facility by assessing the environmental
impact of contaminants found in soil and ground water in the design of goal
oriented subsurface investigative programs that comply with regulatory
standards and guidance on the federal, state, and local level. I applied
multiple aspects of civil and environmental engineering while developing
the conceptual design for site remediation and closure strategies. At
Leppert Associates my efforts have been focused around remediating
contaminated soil and ground water for industrial facilities. Typical
projects involve: site investigation; remediation alternatives search,
development, and implementation; preparing, scheduling, managing, and
overseeing field events; and certifying project completion. Examples of
completed projects and tasks are below.
Quebec, Canada - My client in Canada had a large DNAPL plume migrating off
his property threatening to contaminate a local water supply. My job was
to delineate the nature and extent of the contamination, determine an
optimal remediation alternative, design and install the remediation system.
Specific tasks I performed include:
. Worked with geologists in Canada to develop a detailed understanding
of the underlying soils;
. Developed a three dimensional conceptual model to show the extent of
the DNAPL plume;
. Organized field events to chase the plume to verify the extent of the
DNAPL plume;
. Developed and continually updated cost estimates, schedules, budgets,
and invoices to track the field progress;
. Developed standard operating procedures, sampling and analysis plans,
and health and safety plans;
. Made quick decisions with little over-site, updated plans, schedules,
and budgets when difficulties arose;
. Performed a detailed remediation alternatives search and analysis;
. Developed a unique hydraulic control system coupled with a pump and
treat system;
. Fully developed the design specifications for the chosen remediation
system which included: well locations, pumping demands, piping size
and network, new building placement and sizes, tank locations and
sizes, road and utility line placement, and piping connections to
buildings, wells, and tanks;
. Worked hand in hand with professional engineers to develop a site-
specific treatment train; and
. Developed a PowerPoint presentation for a meeting with the Client and
the Canadian Department of Environmental Quality to present the
results of the site investigation.
Northern Ohio - My client needed to excavate the top two feet of soil from
his RCRA property, install an infiltration and exposure cap, and install a
ground water monitoring network. Specific tasks I performed include:
. Developed tools to track the volume of dirt removed from the site, the
trucks hauling the soil, sub-contractor hours and invoicing, and track
the project budget and schedule;
. Traveled to the property to verify the excavation depth, oversee the
cap installation, and verify the quality of materials;
. Construction management and quality control;
. Lead health and safety meetings, managed site health and safety and
quality assurance/quality control;
. Made on-the-spot changes to the cap's surface when errors were found
in the design;
. Planned and oversaw the installation of ground water monitoring wells
and sample collection;
. Verified that the contamination was removed by statistically comparing
background and historic data with new data; and
. Wrote a Post Closure Plan and Certification of Closure report, which
were approved by a P.E. and the Ohio EPA.
Arkansas - My client needed to re-engineer their existing surface water
controls. Specific tasks I performed include:
. Design - Conceptual to 90% design of surface water management, barrier
wall, drains, and oil/water separators;
. Development of erosion control techniques;
. Developing internal request for proposals, and responding to Federal
and commercial RFPs;
. Development of hydraulic controls to manage surface water during flood
events; and
. Produced bid documents, design drawings, and construction plans.
New Jersey - My client operated an active hazardous waste incinerator and
transport facility. The site experienced several containment failures and
spills. Some areas of the site needed to be closed, some areas required
remediation, and many systems needed updating. Specific tasks I performed
include:
. Performed site specific health risk assessment and evaluations;
. Performed geophysical studies, including boring log interpretation and
developing geologic cross-sections;
. Designed and performed pump tests/hydraulic stress tests to determine
soil properties;
. Coordinated and managed subcontractors before, during, and after field
activities; and
. Communicated with clients to define the scope of work, develop the
optimal path forward, work through difficulties encountered, and
presented project deliverables.
