Special Projects
Initial Opening of Pain Management
Worked with administration to develop a plan of action to open the first Pain Management Center
(PMC) at Jordan Hospital. Set up and took the lead on initial Kick Off Meeting inviting key
stakeholders i.e. staff, physicians and management. Subsequent meetings involving architects,
engineering and nursing were held to develop the physical plant in an existing space. This resulted in
visits to the main office of DPH in Boston to submit plans for approval. In addition, daily onsite visits to
the construction area for clarification of details was necessary for a speedy completion resulting in
bringing the project in two months ahead of schedule.
• Was given complete responsibility for the development and opening of the first Pain Center at
the Jordan Hospital.
• Negotiated with sales representatives for the purchase of equipment and disposables needed.
.
• Developed and implemented all policies and forms for use in the daily practice of the Pain
Center.
• Worked with the hospital engineering department to ensure that all gases, suction, electrical
and space configuration maximized best use of existing space.
Additional PMC Treatment Room
Due to a change in practice involving the use of a Radiation there was a need to create an additional
space to house a C-Arm. Existing space was located within the ICU. Meetings with the Radiation
Physicist needed to be completed to identify the need for lead lining of the space to meet code which
proved unnecessary. This issue was of paramount importance to the staff of the ICU and their
patients as the space abutted the unit. In addition,
I designed plans for the space to allow minimal radiation exposure to staff. Patient flow was also a
consideration as the space was outside the existing PMC and needed to meet the JCAHO criteria for
our imminent survey.
• Planned the renovation of a Critical Care Center (CCC) procedure room to accommodate Pain
Management needs.
• Negotiated with an outside contractor for design, placement and installation of all cabinetry to
ensure minimization of radiation exposure to staff.
• Met with Director of Radiology and the Radiation Physicist to investigate possible radiation
exposure to Pain staff and CCC staff.
• Facilitated a meeting with CCC staff and Radiology to discuss the plan and allay staff
concerns regarding radiation exposure.
Expansion of PMC
Increased patient volume necessitated an additional expansion of PMC. Again, involving a
preexisting space that would be reduced to a shell and developed from the ground up that was in
another wing of the hospital. This space would be utilized for the pre procedure exam rooms and
waiting area. Of note, this would be designed with the understanding that the space would be
temporarily used by PMC with the purpose of being transferred to the X-ray department for
additional services being considered. Interdisciplinary team meetings were conducted to bring
about a cohesive plan of action for design and patient through put for both disciplines.
• Met with staff members regularly to obtain their input about practice, procedures, transport of
patients, and efficient design of the new space to foster a team membership mindset.
• Was the sole representative of the Pain Center at interdisciplinary meetings.
• Worked with the MIS, engineering, volunteer and Anesthesia/Pain department. This new
space had to accommodate future use by the radiology department as well as the Pain
Center’s immediate needs.
PMC Renovation
The consolidation of PMC that would bring all services together in one area necessitated moving to
another location of the hospital.. The newly evacuated OR/PACU/SDC space was chosen. This area
would be shared with Cardiovascular Services for a new Interventional Therapy Services. Multiple
interdisciplinary meetings with key stakeholders were conducted. PMC Resource to a weekly
meeting, I met with architects, contractors, physicians and staff as well as MIS, Pharmacy and
Engineering resulting in a design that was implemented and now serves as a state-of-the-art Pain
Management Center.
• Was the primary representative of the Pain Center at all user meetings in preparation for the
opening of Interventional Therapy Services.
• Interacted directly with contractors, interior design persons, pharmacy, engineering and others
to plan and implement all necessary components of the new location of the Pain Center.
• Reviewed blueprints and made changes concerning specific needs of the procedure room,
which had not been anticipated. Such changes included the inclusion of a procedure room sink
which had been overlooked, location of dictation desk, nursing work areas, the installation of a
McKesson system and designed the placement of cabinets and furnishings to facilitate an
efficient flow of patients.
• Designed office reception space and four exam rooms to allow for record storage, dictation
stations, computers, printers, shelving where necessary. Also location of placement and gases,
suction, electrical outlet interdepartmental intercom system.
