David W. Wise is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the
Genetics & IVF Institute, Inc. (GIVF), a position he has held since
September 2005. GIVF is a $46 million diversified reproductive sciences
company. The Inova hospital system is the largest shareholder in the
company. Based in Fairfax, Virginia, GIVF includes the first outpatient
infertility clinic in the United States, a prenatal genetics clinic, two
infertility and genetics clinics in China (Shanghai and Guangzhou), the
second largest cryobank in the United States, and a preimplanation genetics
diagnostics laboratory. In addition, the company is developing two new
lines of business: a molecular genetics business working in cancer
diagnostics, as well as a new technology, MicroSort , that is currently
completing a clinical trial for the US. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
While the FDA clinical trial is ongoing, Mr. Wise has started to
internationalize MicroSort by opening two offices in Mexico (Mexico City
and Guadalajara) and is in the process of identifying a second country for
laboratory expansion. In his first four full years as CEO (2006-09), GIVF
posted its four most profitable years in the company's twenty-five history.
Mr. Wise has held a number of senior executive positions with
companies across a range of industries. Prior to coming to GIVF, he had
been the Chief Operating Officer of The Lang Companies, a $65 million
consumer products company located in Delafield, Wisconsin. Mr. Wise was
brought in to Lang to manage a workout and prepare the company for sale, a
task that was ultimately accomplished while retiring significant debt held
by the founder. Prior to joining Lang, Mr. Wise headed corporate
development for BDM International (NASDAQ: BDMI) of Tysons Corner,
Virginia. BDM was a Fortune 1000 defense contractor and Information Week
100 IT company. During his time at BDM the company was repositioned from a
government engineering company into a diversified IT company. At BDM he
was actively involved in the team that took the company public and
completed a number of acquisition transactions, including one cross border
transaction. He also initiated one hostile takeover tender (DMR Group of
Montreal), of a firm ultimately acquired by Amdahl. Mr. Wise also co-
managed the sale of BDM to TRW in a $1 billion transaction. BDM was the
first company of the Carlyle Group to go public and from which Carlyle had
a successful exit transaction. Prior to BDM, Mr. Wise had been the Chief
Financial and Administrative Officer of The Centennial Companies, which at
that time was a $125 million fully integrated commercial real estate and
construction company. He was brought in to oversee a workout of the
company's $450 million debt during the severe real estate downturn of the
early 1990s, a task that was successfully completed along with winding down
of operations, while completing all remaining development and construction
projects.
Mr. Wise has also worked as a consultant to the chairman of Golder
Rauner GTCR, which is a $9 billion private equity firm in Chicago.
Mr. Wise began his career in strategic planning. He was a management
consultant with Coopers & Lybrand, as well as serving on the corporate
planning staffs of Mellon Bank and Sears (Roebuck) World Trade.
He currently serves as vice chairman of both the Shanghai Ji Ai
Genetics & IVF Institute, China-US Center (a joint venture with the
Affiliated OB/GYN Hospital of Fudan University) and Guangdong Ji Ai
Genetics & IVF Institute, China-US Center (a joint venture with the
Guandong Provincial Hospital for Maternal & Children's Health). He also is
the Chairman of the following internal boards: GIVF International, Ltd.
(Mauritius); Cryogenic Laboratories, Inc., and MicroSort Comercializadora
S. de R. L. de C.V. (Mexico).
He has authored numerous articles for newspapers, magazines and
professional journals such as the Wall Street Journal, The Columbia
(University) Journal of World Business, Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun,
American Banker, Jane's Defence Weekly, Armed Forces Journal, Navy Times
and Strategic Insights (Navy Postgraduate School). He was a speaker at the
annual convention of The Turnaround Management Association and at Southern
Methodist University Law School's Institute on International Finance. He
contributed a chapter to the conference book: Prospects for International
Lending and Reschedulings.
Mr. Wise has had a great interest in public policy since his days as
a student. He is the youngest person elected three times as a delegate to
a national nominating convention. In 1972, at age 19, he was elected to
the Illinois delegation to the Democratic National Convention. He was
elected again in 1976 and in 1980 served on the Credentials Committee for
the convention. He also worked on Congressional, gubernatorial and
presidential campaigns.
He was a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Dayton in
1975, attended summer school at Middlebury College in 1979 and in 1982
received an MALD degree in international business from The Fletcher School
of Law & Diplomacy, which is co-administered by Tufts and Harvard
Universities.
