SELECTED EXAMPLE OF JOB-RELATED COURSEWORK

Cell Culturing Workshop

My most recent lab experience came during the summer of 2009, when I took a 4 week workshop at East Carolina

University designed to give students hands on experience cultivating cells. In the workshop we grew human

epithelial kidney cells, and mouse myoblast cells, that we used for to learn other lab techniques such as: Cell

counting “via” hematocytometer, vector infection, RNA isolation, and uses of a Flow Cytometer.

DNA Digestion of PUC 19 DNA

In biological techniques lab, we cleaved circular PUC 19 DNA that we extracted from cultures of bacterial cells.

This DNA was then digested by two Endonucleases (EcoR1, Tag1,). The cleaved DNA was then migrated. In an

agarose gel, via Gel Electrophoresis, and then photographed to examine different strand sizes, and migration

lengths.

Extraction Lab Practical

In organic chemistry lab, we were required to create and carry out an experimental procedure for an acid-base

extraction. I reviewed the experiments we had conducted previously, conceived a procedure similar to those, and

carried out the assignment in a relatively short amount of time. Upon completion, I discovered that my percent

yield (by weight) and purity (based on melting point) was among the highest in the class.

Chemical Literature Assignment

In organic chemistry lab, we were required to identify, find the structure of, and reference several different

ingredients from an everyday product. I researched the active ingredients of Macchar Mosquito Repellent. I

learned how to use SciFinder Scholar and other resources in East Carolina University Joyner Library to find

information on organic compounds.

Thin Layer Chromatography Experiment

In organic chemistry lab, we were required to identify the active components in a non-prescription analgesic drug. I

carried out this identification using thin layer chromatography (TLC) to compare the analgesic with a set of known

reference compounds. I determined, qualitatively and quantitatively (using Rf values), that the unknown analgesic

drug was aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid)
