Professional Experience Summary
January 1 - February 26 2010
Consultant with Arrow Partnership
I consulted on a short-term contract to help initiate a software Product
Management function for a company that provides products and services in
the absence management space to health care providers and to private
companies who need help managing their employee health care services.
Openwave Systems - August 2003 to May 2008
Principal Product Manager
I directed systems engineers, software engineers and project managers on
products and services efforts in the area of wireless location based
services. My work involved setting product strategy, managing all
requirements, defining features, preparing sales and marketing materials,
supporting global sales and interacting with customers. My product,
Location Manager, is a world market leading wireless gateway product that
mediates between location-enabled applications and wireless
networks/technologies currently deployed at Sprint and other global
carriers for commercial (IP based) and emergency (E-911) services. This
became an Agile/Rally development environment. I helped integrate product
processes and deliverables from Waterfall into Agile during this timeframe.
SignalSoft Corporation - July 2000 to August 2003
Director, Product Management
I tailored an existing location services product for our main customers,
Sprint and T-Mobile, while keeping the product roadmap and feature set open
for very different customers in Europe, Asia and South Africa. I developed
new approaches and tools to manage requirements, designs and other key
deliverables as my product grew revenues from <$1m to >$50M. Openwave
purchased SignalSoft in 2003. These processes helped minimize the amount of
code we had to support globally.
US WEST Advanced Technologies - January 2000 to July 2000
Director, Interactive Services Test & Automation
I directed and managed 30+ software engineers and project managers on new
products/services in the areas of Internet applications & services,
wireless networks, intelligent networks, integrated messaging, video and
enhanced voice/speech technologies products.
US WEST Advanced Technologies - November 1997 to January 2000
Director, Technology Intelligence & Engineering
I directed engineers and analysts in technology competitive intelligence
activities to influence and support corporate business strategies for voice
and data services. My work involved both external research and engineering
analyses in the field and in our labs.
US WEST Advanced Technologies - August 1995 to November 1997
Director, New Product Development
I directed telecommunications professionals in new product development
efforts across multiple business units and functional organizations. I
oversaw the deployment of both commercial and consumer products and
services, including the first ISP in the US, providing strategic and
tactical direction.
US WEST Interactive Video Enterprises - 1995
Product Development Manager
I provided product direction and coordinated product development activities
for the first US interactive broadband and narrowband products. Part of
this enterprise later became Comcast.
US WEST TECHNOLOGIES - 1993 to 1995
Project Manager/Systems Engineer
I lead multimedia software development projects and represented the
development team in internal and external client communities.
US WEST Information Technologies - 1991 to 1993
Information Developer, Requirements Analyst
I manage technical publications, requirements analysis, and overall
communication efforts on projects involving advanced communications
products, object-oriented development, and electronic document management.
U S WEST Advanced / Information Technologies 1990-1991
Manager-Project Administration/Information Development
I managed a staff of information developers and project administrators. I
lead business-modeling sessions to help define and explain corporate
business processes related to billing. I facilitated agreements between
corporate data managers and projects.
Before 1990
I performed business analyses and designed and produced technical and non-
technical documents for a wide variety of businesses. I had my own software
company.
