SUMMARY
Experienced Software Engineer with expertise in full life cycle embedded
and general software development, systems design for networking industries.
Proven track record in all aspects of full cycle software development as
defined in ISO-9000 recommendations, including project management, software
design, implementation, testing and software configuration management.
Experience
Cisco Systems 1997 - September 2009
Technical Leader (2000 - 2009)
. Cisco Next Generation Access Router Project
Developed MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching), IP Multicast, and Packet
Capture features for the
next generation access router platform, which is a multi-cores hardware.
Cisco's IOS runs as a daemon on the top of a Linux embedded Operating
Systems. Wrote the Functional Specifications, Design Specifications, Test
Documents and Test Plans for the features above. Developed a shim layer
of callback functions between IOS and Client to configure the MPLS,
multicast, and packet capture features in client program and micro-code.
Implemented the features in micro-code for the data forwarding path.
. OBFL Project for Cisco Cat6000
Implemented On Board Failure Logging. The challenge is to implement
functions and features
developed in IOS environment to a limited environment in firmware but
deliver the same functionality. Wrote the design documents, implemented
and ran the test.
. Cross-Functional Project for Cisco Cat6000
Participated in an across functions team consists of DevTest DE, ASIC
DE, firmware DE and
management across functions. The team resolved 29 most difficult and
challenge bugs in performance. Among them, a very significant hardware
bug was revealed and cannot be corrected in the field. Developed a work-
around in software/firmware to mitigate this hardware limitation. Created
software functional specification and implemented changes in firmware and
coordinated with IOS/CatOS on the CAT6000 Supervisor side and DevTest
Team to deliver the solution for SupW deployment.
. Redstone Project for Motorola IP-RAN Network
This project was one of the most important projects in Cisco Service
Provider's Business Unit due to its
technical complexity and very high business impact. Exceeded the stretch
goal of supporting 8 T1s per RPM-PR (Route Processor Module-PRemium) over
MLPPP (Multilink PPP) multi-bundle links for voice (10 T1's). Earned
Cisco CAP reward for contribution. Before my involvement, only 2 T1s
could be supported. Coordinated technical discussion with the
architecture team and made contributions to fix bugs on CEF (Cisco
Express Forwarding) switch for MLP ATM interface, which is the key
element for improving the performance in this solution. Participated and
contributed to the testing IOS feature discussion and to forming the
testing model. The project also involved the implementation of MLPPP
(Multilink Point-to-Point Protocol), PPPmux, cUDP functions on MGX
(Multiservice Gateway Switch) MPSM (Multiprotocol Service Module) and RPM-
XF (Route Processor Module) card to improve the QoS, performance, and the
scalability of MGX based IP-RAN (Internet Protocol - Radio Access
Network) solution for Motorola. Wrote the software functional spec,
design spec, test plan. Implemented the new features in micro-code
(Toaster - a Cisco Multi-core Network Processor) and IOS client code.
Trained and mentored other engineers in the team for new features
implemented in micro-code and IOS client code.

3 Toaster Project for AT&T Network
Led a team of ten software engineers to develop features on the next
generation Router Blade (RPM-XF)
on MGX. The features include MLPPP/LFI (Multilink PPP/Link Fragmentation
and Interleaving) over ATM (for voice), MPLS (MultiProtocol Label
Switching) in frame and cell mode, new CEF/FIB (Cisco Express
Forwarding/Forwarding Information Base), QoS (multiple policy actions),
PPPoATM, cRTP, MVPN etc. RPM-XF is a Toaster-based next generation card,
and Toaster is a Cisco's network processor complex (micro-code) consists
of 16 CPUs. This new card will enable MGX8850 as Cisco's next generation
aggregation edge box. I was the project manager and the technical lead
for this project. In addition to be an individual contributor in MLP/LFI
and MPLS area, my responsibilities also include managing the project,
driving the schedule and leading the team to architect, design,
implement, and test this feature set. I am also responsible for the
functional, design specifications and test plan. This project (MoonRaker)
is in DevTest stage and will be delivered to AT&T for field trail in
March 2004. Involved in resolving AT&T field issues and fixed bugs for
AT&T real-time network (silent reboot in some race conditions). Got CAP
reward for my contribution.
ATM Traffic Management Project for AT&T
RPM card, which is the router blade in MGX8850, had a problem of traffic
management on its ATM
interface. This issue was lingering for a while and presumed to be a
basic limitation with no possible solution. Through the intensive
investigation to understand the hardware data specifications I was able
to suggest and later prove that the issue could be resolved within the
current design and architecture. Idle cells with an invalid source slot
ID were introduced as the centerpiece of the solution. The second part of
this solution is to introduce an automatic clock setting between the
shelf management and the RPM micro-code. This also would benefit the
customer operation efficiency.
Manager, Software Development (1997 - 2000)
. Managed a group of software engineers to develop software running on
Cisco's IOS for several different platforms. Worked with Marketing and
cross-Business Unit cross-functional teams in the development of program
plan. Drove the project to Execution Commit (EC) as a DE (Development
Engineer) manager. Understood the deliverables of all functional areas.
Translated work items, dependencies and information about available
resources into an integrated project schedule. Led the team through all
phases of the development cycle.
. As a DE manager monitored the progress of projects according to
milestones and schedules. Worked proactive to anticipate and resolved
project issues and escalate when appropriate.
. Managed the growth of the department using excellent recruiting skills.
Coached the team by providing timely ongoing feedback. Supported the
employee development.
Cabletron Systems Corporation 1995 - 1997
Project Lead / Senior Technical Staff
. Architected, designed and implemented ATM Forum's PNNI Version 1.0 for
Cabletron's SmartCell Switch product.
. Led a team to design, develop, debug, integrate and test the software of
PNNI and Signaling for Cabletron's SmartCell Switch. Devising project
schedule, assigning tasks and general project management for a software
development team. Designed the data structures, algorithms, and
programming logic for the implementations. Designed the interfaces
between the PNNI routing and signaling. Personally developed,
implemented, debugged, integrate and tested the PNNI routing part. The
real-time multi-tasking kernel of Cabletron's SmartCell Switch is
VxWorks.
. Represented the company to participate in the ATM Forum Technical
Meetings and activities.
