Academic Project:
Packet Filtering Firewall with Sniffing (PFS).
1 Language of Implementation: C.
Operating System: RedHat Linux ver 9 Kernel 2.4.
DESCRIPTION:
The project allows system administrators to protect resources
by blocking access. The project also allows viewing the network traffic
coming and going through network interface. The module for restricting the
traffic works at kernel level. The module uses the dynamic rule set as set
by network administrator. The incoming data is analyzed after processed at
data link layer. The access is then allowed by checking the rule sets for
IP address, Port no and Protocol. If access is allowed then the data is
allowed to pass at the network layer. The project also provides the real
time display of the traffic going across the network interface. The project
is useful for managers and other senior employees who want to remotely
access the resource but want to block other employees from accessing that
resource such as database server. The project when installed on gateway can
also be useful to keep an eye on employee's activity by logging their
traffic that they send to internet.
