Work Experience
Research Associate and Lab Manager at Trenchless Technology Center (TTC)
Department of Civil Engineering, Louisiana Tech University, Ruston,
LA (Sep 2009 - Present)
As a research associate my responsibilities are
. To study the electrical properties of conductive filler reinforced
geopolymer cement for EMI (electromagnetic interference) shielding
wall panels and ESD (electro static discharge) flooring applications.
. To study the rheological properties of fly ash based geopolymer cement
for its extrudability and to develop commercial applications from it.
. To study the cyclic thermal and pressure loading effects on the
frictional forces at the pipe-grout interface of a fusible PVC pipe
used in slip lining application (project objectives accomplished).
. To assist the supervisor in writing proposals and acquiring funding
for the projects at TTC.
As a lab manager my responsibilities are
. To monitor and schedule student and technical staff hours
. To give guidance to undergraduate and graduate students on their
research projects
. To serve as a point of contact between the external entities and
the lab
. To oversee all the projects at TTC
. To keep track of lab supplies and place the orders for required
material
Research Assistant at Trenchless Technology Center
Department of Civil Engineering, Louisiana Tech University, Ruston,
LA (Mar 2005 - Aug 2009)
As a graduate research assistant I've worked on the following projects
. Electrokinetically induced protective coating for concrete sewer pipes
against biological induced corrosion. Under the influence of a weak
electric field antimicrobial agent was driven into the pores of
concrete to attain resistance against biological corrosion. Atomic
Absorption spectroscopy tests were performed on the electrokinetically
coated samples to confirm the presence of antimicrobial agent.
. Smart materials for construction and structural health monitoring of
civil infrastructure. Carbon fibers were added to the fly ash based
geopolymer cement to induce electrical conductivity in the
cementitious binder. AC impedance spectroscopy analyses were performed
on the sample specimens to quantify the electrical conductivity
property. Dynamic loading of the conductive specimens revealed that
the changes in electrical resistivity were related to the state of
stress in the sample specimens. Experimental study showed that by
monitoring the changes in electrical resistance of a conductive
structural member, its health could be monitored.
. Material characterization and testing of a structural liner used in
sewer rehab applications. The liner was subjected to different
chemical solutions that are typically found in a sewer atmosphere
(Pickle Jar Test - L.A. Green Book). Its strength was evaluated by
performing standard tensile (ASTM D 638) and hardness tests (ASTM D
2240) on the sample specimens before and after subjecting to chemical
solutions. Third party testing of protective sewer liner.
. Improving the mechanical strength of a low viscosity cementitious
grout. Four different fiber types were added to a cementitious grout
without affecting its flow and viscosity properties. Standard flexure
(ASTM C 580) and tensile tests (ASTM C 307) were performed on the
grout sample specimens to evaluate the changes in strength by to the
addition of fibers. Third party testing of commercial cementitious
grout used in GIPP application.
