eXPERIENCE
HEWLETT-PACKARD COMPANY 1997-2009
(formerly Compaq Computer, Genicom and Digital Equipment Corporation)
System Software Engineer
Through the ownership of four different companies, had complete product and engineering responsibility
•
for DCPS, the PostScript print application and driver for the HP OpenVMS operating system. This software
handles the user interface, printer communication, printer feature selection and rich formatting features for print
jobs.
Determined product direction and planned new software features; designed, wrote and tested code changes;
•
tested software and printer hardware and the interaction between them; managed field tests, wrote
documentation; built releases; diagnosed and fixed customer-reported problems.
• Software Design
Added new features through thoughtful design and planning, ensuring customer ease-of-use by carefully
maintaining backward compatibility with previous releases.
• Coding and Implementation
Implemented enhancements and bug fixes with structured code requiring a minimum of
•
maintenance and producing a minimum of defects. Ported entire application’s existing Alpha and VAX
code to support Integrity hardware and software, working with test versions of the operating system,
firmware and software until final versions were ready.
• Product Requirements Definition
Actively reached out to customers at technical symposiums, and through e-mail, user forums and
•
newsgroups about software and hardware issues, and future product requirements. Stayed abreast of
industry trends for addition of new features. Prioritized new features and product improvements for
support of hundreds of printers from HP and other printer manufacturers.
• Customer Support and Problem Escalation
Responded quickly to customer escalations, questions and problems, providing timely and accurate
•
fixes and configuration advice.
• Hardware and Software Testing
Paul Anderson Experience (continued) page 2
Tested both print driver software and printer hardware to ensure proper print job formatting and
•
network communication using multiple network and printing protocols. Testing involved many versions of
the product, operating system, TCP/IP software and printer firmware.
• Coordination with other Product Groups
Discussed future printers and features with engineers and marketing elsewhere in HP. Planned
•
releases around printer introductions and obtained prototype printers for testing. Diagnosed bugs in printer
firmware. Coordinated and consulted with other OpenVMS engineers to ensure compatibility and
interoperability with the operating system. Tested new operating system releases.
• System Management
Physically configured and managed dozens of production and development OpenVMS clusters and
systems, and associated Windows and Macintosh systems, required for product development, testing and
support. Installed and upgraded a large number of layered products and operating system upgrades on a
regular basis, including systems with shared storage, RAID sets and volume shadowed disks.
• Product Building and Release
Created installation procedures for accurate and easy installation in customer environments, built
•
and prepared product for release, managed customer field tests and revised user documentation.
• Documentation
Wrote and maintained concise, clear user documentation, including multiple manuals and online
•
documentation, updated with each release.
