I have cataloged, archived and filed newspaper articles in conjunction with
photographs from a hardcopy source to various computer-generated databases; along with
answering incoming patrons/in-house telephone calls in a professional and timely manner
and scheduling appointments for researchers to browse various materials.
My daily workload included: retrieving all newspaper articles, photographs, captions
and pdfs (portable document format) for each page of a designated paper to be linked and
archived into the Merlin System database. My objective was to systematically place
necessary keywords on all articles, place captions on all photographs to be linked to
every article along with pdfs for every page of the paper in a timely manner. In addition,
if there was a correction(s) for that day, it was my task to retrieve the correction
(cut/paste) to article for visibility. If an article, caption and/or photo were missing for a
page, it was my duty to search, find and retrieve item(s) from the ATS database to be
copied and transferred over for archiving. In addition, I was assigned: (1) for the upkeep
of magazines/newspaper subscriptions, (2) answered incoming/in-house telephone calls
requesting help and assistance from databases (3) assisted historical researchers to
browse files (4) research/locate articles for researchers dating back to 1897-present (5)
assisted reporters, editors, editorial writers in: locating/retrieving other newspaper articles
(nexis lexis database) for fact gathering; retrieving research information from various
databases for background information(6) maintain the upkeep of newspaper clip files in
filing cabinets along with hardcopy photographs (7) helped in conducting interviews and
catalog in-house photographs for book publication: Our Charleston Volumes 1&2.
