Director, Innovative Projects (Business Process Improvement), 2006-2010
Reported to the Senior Vice President of Health Systems Design and
Performance collaboration and partnership with health plan and physician
leadership was responsible for:
. Led, managed the design and implemented Internet portals for Kaiser
members to access their clinical information and empower them to manage
their own health. The second portal provided contracted physicians and
hospitals access to member clinical and insurance related information
improving their satisfaction with KP.
. Managed a staff of three and an annual budget of $1 million
. Responsible for a cross-functional team to design and implement an
electronic referral management process improving turnaround time from 10-
12 days to 2 days exceeding regulatory requirements.
. Co-led a multidisciplinary team to outsource and operationalize pre-
certification, concurrent review, and case management.
Regional Project Executive, KP HealthConnect, 2003-2006
Reported to the Health Plan President for the implementation of KP
HealthConnect (Epic Systems) for the Ohio region. Responsible for 20 to
120 staff and a project budget of $40 million. KP HealthConnect is the
largest civilian EMR implementation in the country.
. Formed and led cross-functional teams of physicians, clinical managers,
business staff and labor partners to review current process for redesign
for the implementation of new scheduling, registration, billing, and
electronic medical record systems. The electronic medical record system
included computerized physician order entry.
. Reengineered and integrated processes to optimize technology adoption for
the delivery of clinical care; transitioning Kaiser Permanente employees
from pens, paper and fax to electronic processes.
. Led a change management team of Training, Organizational Effectiveness,
and Internal and External Communication staff who developed and
disseminated weekly communications including quick tips, FAQs, and
updates about implementation status and problem resolution.
. Implemented a Patient Safety program in response to KPHC implementation
of Practice Management, Ambulatory Medical Record, My health manager, and
Online Affiliate.
. Responsible for deployment planning, site sequencing, and go-live and
post implementation support activities meeting an aggressive
implementation schedule.
. Developed Help Desk protocols to support the regional requirements based
on system build and service level agreements.

. Responsible for an annual budget of $30-$36 million and a staff of 70
employees including programmers, help desk, database administrators,
network analysts, and training.
. Developed resource stewardship program with key organization leaders to
oversee IT resources and projects.
. Improved business satisfaction with IT services by championing the
establishment and ongoing operation of industry best practices including
Change, Asset, Problem, Incident, Service and Request Management.

. Designed implementation program, developed curriculum for and managed
training and support for Medical Automated Record System (M.A.R.S.)
including 18 training and support staff and a $500,000 training budget.
. Identified opportunities to reduce medical record costs by $1.5 million
annually while ensuring availability of clinical information 24/7.
. Formed and led a cross-functional team responsible for all aspects of Y2K
including clinical risk mitigation, contingency planning and IT efforts
impacting KP's medical and administrative offices.
. Coordinate the efforts for the consolidation of the regional data center
into the national data centers for medical and business operations.
Coordinated ongoing communication between KP-OH and KP national to
resolve system availability issues.
. Represented KP-IT OH in multiple facility moves, openings and closings to
insure a smooth transition with minimal impact to care delivery and
business processes.
