EXPERIENCE
08/2009-Present. Quality Maintenance Technician for Sears Holdings Company. Maintain a number of
facilities and buildings in functional and safe condition.
Design, install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair POS, communications, environmental conditioning, and
protective systems. Administer SNMP Cisco based local data networks and their connections to a WAN
through DS-1 data channels and Consumer Configurable add-drop multiplexers. Remotely administer Unix
based PBX phone switches and Radionics security and fire alarm systems. Developed my own, PC and
Labview based, synthetic instruments to test these devices.
Maintain and repair air conditioners, boilers, chillers, elevators, escalators, automatic doors, pneumatic,
hydraulic equipment and their control systems.
Engineered a wireless 2.4 gigahertz link to transmit surveillance video a distance of a mile. Rebuilt cash
registers back to functionality after IBM field engineers had failed. Outperform outside professionals to the
extent that no expensive contract help has been necessary for a decade, resulting in substantial savings.
Wrote a software application to trap unauthorized long distance calls and alert a supervisor to the source
of the call. A database of acceptable area codes and numbers was created. When access code toll calls were
made a macro compared the number to this data. Any questionable number would create an automated page.
Developed a procedure to layout wireless networks without special test equipment. Modified the access
point software to allow monitoring of the AGC on all the radios. Ran the software on a radio cash register to
allow an RF survey of the coverage in the space the system would be used. These layouts using the actual
system equipment, performed better than those layed out by engineers with test equipment.
Developed a process to repoint dishes after a satellite failure. After roughly pointing the antennas with a
compass and protractor, accessing the AGC signal with a multi-meter, allowed for the fine pointing. This
procedure could be done by maintenance technicians from each store with the directions in an e-mail
message.
Troubleshoot and repair consumer electronics at the component level.
10/2008-08/2009. Field Service Engineer for Bowe Bell+Howell. Ogden IRS 1160 W. 12th st., Ogden, Utah
84201. Installed, maintained, and repaired high speed mail inserter equipment. This entailed the integration of
a variety of electromechanical and electronic devices, and diverse software operating systems into compatible
operation. Trained and assisted machine operators in efficient procedures to produce mail pieces at a secure
US Government IRS site. Performed repairs down to the component level using requisite soldering skills.
10/2007-10/2008. Maintenance Manager Assistant for Larry H Miller Theater Inc. at the Megaplex 13 movie

cooking and refridgeration equipment. Installed digital projectors and satellite link communication equipment

1991-2000. Center for Aerospace Technology(CAST) at Weber State University.
Experimenter in the Ultra Small Aperture Terminal Experiment(USAT-X) project. Operated a commercial
Ku band satellite data link side-by-side with and experimental Ka band link through the NASA’s Advanced
Communications Technology Satellite(ACTS).
Assisted in the development of the link parameters and the design of the experimental radios. Assembled
the radios and tested them to characterize their performance. Tested the compliance of dielectric resonance
oscillators with the phase noise specifications. Performed radiometric testing to assure the antenna field
patterns.
Assembled the commercial earth station and operated it as a remote site, with 2 full duplex channels and
a background control, on Southern California Edisons(SCE) control network. Used the Hughes Network
Telephony Earth Station(TES) modems to host the experimental link. This process required that the IF of the
Ka gear closely matched the frequency of the Ku gear. Weber State did not have signal generator equipment
that was up to this task. This problem was solved by using the modems test bench software to generate a
stable signal with enough power to split and drive both radios. With a storage spectrum analyzer it was then
easy to walk the displays onto each other, by adjusting the local oscillators to match the Doppler tracking
ability of the modems.
Developed a C language application program to emulate SCE’s Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition(SCADA) data to transmit over the links. This application collected bit error rate data and
correlated the rates of the side-by-side channels for comparison. These rates were verified by the injection of
Pseudo Noise(PN) codes to change the energy per bit to noise energy ratio.
Consultant on a project to construct spacecraft batteries using commercial, off the shelf rechargeable
cells, to replace expensive, space rated batteries. Developed a process and testbed to match NiCad cells for
capacity. Programmed an application to automate this process. Designed the circuitry to control the usage of
redundant batteries and their charging from photovoltaic cells. Tested the completed batteries and circuitry for
shock and G forces, and radiation resistance. Modeled the thermal dissipation characteristics due to
convection in a vacuum, and conduction to the heat sink of the space frame.
Consultant on a project to collect and process data from a gamma ray sensor package on a spacecraft, and
downlink the results. The event data had to be correlated in time and to spacecraft orientation. The system
was designed to use a Field Programmable Gate Array(FPGA) from Xilinx. A combinatorial logic circuit was
described in VHDL in the Xilinx development suite. The FPGA handled the A/D conversion from the
instruments and the Digital Signal Processing to bridge to the space craft communications system. The
printed circuit board was designed on EMcad and modeled for electromagnetic compatibility compliance,
signal integrity, and thermal dissipation. The boundary scan capabilities on the FPGA were used for
functional testing of the prototype.
The data link radio in this project was as a testbed for use as a versatile software defined radio to
backup the main command and control communications link on the satellite. The DSP topics of frequency
synthesis, modulation, code generation, error correction, compression, encryption, correlation, SerDes,
channel adaptation and spectral density were studied. Matlab and Simulink were used to model the
performance of a multi-band radio. Development was started on the software modules and their interaction
under CORBA control.
