Dear Sir or Madam,
“No one said it would be easy - they just said it would be worth it” (Unknown). That is the way I
try to live my life. I have extensive background in GIS related applications and feel I would be a
strong asset on this project. I am currently perusing my masters in Spatial Information and
Engineering at the University of Maine.
For my Eagle Scout project, I undertook a 350-hour GIS project to map out local parks in New
Castle, New York and created trail maps to post on the internet. I was subsequently paid by the
town to update four maps this past summer.
I performed fieldwork for Indra USA, a private GIS company. I have also worked with the
municipality of New Castle doing GIS projects, including mapping storm, sewer and water
assets. When I was working for the municipality I was responsible for field verification using
ArcGIS queries to check the validity of a third party data. These experiences have given me
confidence in managing large scale GIS and research projects.
I presented at the Association of American Geographers conference in 2009 and 2010. The 2009
research examined nighttime lights in order to deduce population density within cities. My 2010
research attempted to quantify light pollution by comparing a user defined dataset called (Globe
at Night) with Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) imagery.
I believe there is a great need for maps and data showing spatial relationships and information
more clearly. This need, combined with my in-depth experience and energy, would help you and
your organization meet a wide variety of GIS related goals.
I look forward to working with you in the future.
Sincerely,
Luke Kaim
