PROFILE

A technical specialist in Energy Science from Carnegie Mellon University, I wish to obtain a position with

responsibilities in the design and development of new technologies for the production, transport, and efficient

use of energy, by utilizing my problem solving and leadership skills. With a multi disciplinary approach, I

undertook courses in Mechanical Engineering (Major), Civil and Environmental Engineering; Material Science

engineering; and Engineering and Public Policy departments and graduated with a GPA of 3.8/4.0

TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA

MS Energy Science, Technology and Policy (August 2010 – June 2011)

Performed a detailed emission analysis of an IGCC power plant modeling for CO 2, sNOx and SOx

emissions using the CEA tool and comparing it to a conventional power plant of the same capacity.

Performed analysis on the exergetic and the economic aspects of the natural gas combined cycle

(Rankine and Brayton cycles) including extensive research of the boiler, condenser and heat exchanger

aspects to improve the efficiency of a combined cycle gas power plant. Also considered were pre heating of

compressed air before the combustion stage and utilizing the heat available at the inter cooling stage of the

Brayon Cycle to heat water before the steam generation stage of the Rankine Cycle. The exergetic

efficiency for the combined cycle obtained for our model improved by 23 % using MATLAB and Cantera for

modeling.

Assessed the current and future technologies of the transportation sector of United States in terms of

their potential energy and GHG savings, as well as the mitigation cost from energy use, as a part of an

energy demand side project.

Performed the feasibility analysis and calculated the CO2 mitigation cost of replacing a conventional coal

power plant (Bruce Mansfield Plant, Pennsylvania) with mitigation options like introducing a carbon

sequestration retrofit to the existing plant, a completely new advanced CCS plant and a wind farm of the

same capacity. The study proved that the retrofitting option was technically and economically the most

efficient at reducing CO2 emissions, considering the current potential of other technologies.

Studied the potential of Roughened Silicon Nanowires as efficient thermo electric materials. The study

proved that introduction of surface roughness in silicon nanowires, reduces the thermal conductivity, thereby

influencing the Figure of Merit, Z, which is a chief quality in determining thermo electric materials.

Cerena Foundation, Energy Sector, Hyderabad, India

Junior Scientist (March 2009 – July 2010)

Formulated an energy calculator which accounts for capital and revenue emissions for the

urban and rural sector (75% of India’s population). First of its kind in India in terms of its depth and

complexity, the scope of this calculator is to access the energy footprint on an individual basis. The analysis

involved computing the embodied energy in products and services by using the basic principles of

thermodynamics and life cycle analysis of processes. Project currently being adopted by the Dept of

Science and Technology, Govt. of India. Also prioritized options for clean energy to reducing emissions with

renewable technologies.

Defined an eco centric model for accessing the energy flows in a river system to sustain its

various, biological, physical and chemical processes. This involved the calculation from an eco centric point

of view, the minimum environmental flow required in a river system to sustain the various processes in

a river. The methodology used was the reverse ecological footprint, which is different from the available

ones. The calculations involved treating river water both as a mass as well as an energy carrier and a

storage device.

Infosys India Pvt Ltd, Pune, India

Software Engineer (July 2006 – Dec 2008)

Software developer in core mainframes technology like COBOL, DB2, JCL

Developed a software module, Data Exchange (DEX) and became a DEX process

expert

Green Analyst (July 2006 – Dec 2008)

Developed energy efficiency solutions for Infosys Campus as a part of the Corporate

Social Responsibility (CSR). Work involved installing renewable energy solutions, performing energy audits

to identify the energy use in various activities and tackling the energy reduction for important and immediate

activities.

Converting food waste into energy by installing bio digesters. This used around 1.2

tons of food wasted daily in the campus, which was converted into useful cooking gas. This replaced 60% of

Liquefied Petroleum Gas that was normally used for cooking.

Replacement of incandescent lamps with CFL’s in two building and carried out an

assessment of the payback period on energy saved over the lifetime of the lamps and found it to be

approximately two years.

Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad, India

BS Mechanical Engineering (Dec 2005 – April 2006)

Designed and developed a Variable Compression Ratio Diesel Engine and studied its performance with

diesel and sunflower oil as its fuel. The optimum fuel mixture and the compression ratio were identified for

the best engine performance.

Presented a paper titled ‘Residential cooling with Geothermal Energy’. The paper won the first prize in a

competition organized at the technical festival of Gayathri Vidhya Parishad, Vishakapatnam.

LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE

Indian Youth Climate Network, India

National Coordinator Members and Volunteers (Jan 2009 – Dec 2009)

I was part of the core team defined for Planning and Implementation of ‘Climate Solutions Road

o

Tour’ in Jan 2009. We set a record for the most miles (2800 miles) traveled in an electric car in a month.

We travelled across India from Chennai to Delhi in solar powered electric cars to document

o

various environmental solutions from cities and villages en route.

I undertook the role of documenting several solutions. We are in the process of implementing

o

this through various projects all across the nation to build an environmental friendly India. A couple of

articles written on the documented solutions can be accessed at

http://www.indiaclimatesolutions.com/blog/20.

Post the road tour, IYCN established a youth chapters in many Indian cities to undertake climate

o

change related awareness and activism activities

Founding Director, Ecowrappers (Jan 2007 Dec 2009)

• Used audio visual tools to spread awareness about social and environmental issues.

Our environmental documentary ‘Go Green Pune’ won the national level second prize in the short film

category of an environmental film festival Eco Fest’09 conducted by Foliage Outdoors

EDUCATION

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA (Aug 2010 – June 2011)

MS in Energy Science, Technology and Policy (GPA: 3.8/4.0)
