Laboratory Skills

I have several years of professional experience with the following

techniques:

IEF, PAGE, Western blot, immunopurification, HPLC, IC, UV-Vis assays,

fluorescence assays, ELISA, SPE, liquid-liquid extraction, and mass

spectrometry (ion trap, cyclotron, and quadrupole).

Employment History

Sep 2009 - Present: Analytical Chemist

Huntington Medical Research Institutes, Pasadena, CA

Analysis of biological samples (tissue, plasma, and cerebrospinal

fluid) for compounds associated with neurological conditions such as

Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and chronic migraine.

Research is directed toward discovering the pathology and biomarkers

of neurological conditions. Specific responsibilities include setting

up assays, analyzing results using standard statistical tools, and

presentation of data.

Dec 2006 - Jul 2009: Research Associate

Anti-Doping Research Institute, Mar Vista, CA

Assisted senior research scientists in the development of new methods

for detection of performance-enhancing drugs. ADR is a nonprofit

institute founded by the former Director of UCLA's Olympic Analytical

Laboratory. Specific projects included detection of enkephalins in

serum, characterization of erythropoietic proteins using ion

chromatography, and detection of growth hormone in human urine. Work

on the latter project was published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Jun 2005 - Dec 2006: Staff Research Associate / Laboratory Assistant

UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory, Los Angeles, CA

Staff Research Associate: Screening of urine samples for

erythropoietic proteins using specialized isoelectric focusing /

Western blotting protocol, densitometric analysis of graphic data, and

compilation of results into laboratory reports.

Laboratory Assistant: Preparation of urine samples for GC/MS and LC/MS

analysis by addition of internal standard, pH adjustment, enzymatic

deglycosylation, liquid-liquid or solid-phase extraction, and chemical

derivatization.

Jun 1998 - Jul 2002: Radionuclide Chemist

Isotope Products Laboratories, Burbank, CA

Manufacture and calibration of radioactive sources for use in

radioactive metering devices.

Education

M.S. in Analytical Chemistry Jan 2008 - Jun 2010

California State University, Los Angeles

Graduate Research: Chemometric optimization of a liquid

chromatography method for characterization of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP)

photo-oxidation products. The photo-oxidation of BaP, a ubiquitous

carcinogen, occurs by least two distinct mechanisms and yields several

isomeric photoproducts. Analysis of these compounds in the

environment requires well-designed methods for sensitive and selective

detection. My project involved chemometric modeling of a response

surface of resolution and retention time against synergistic HPLC

factors, and resulted in complete optimization of the method.

B.A. in Music Sep 2002 - Jun

2005

California State University, Long Beach

B.S. in Chemistry

Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles Aug 1993 -

May 1998

Awards & Honors

2010 Special Recognition in Graduate Studies, CSULA

2005 President's Honor List, CSULB

2005 Pi Kappa Lambda Honor Society, CSULB

2005 Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, CSULB

1998 Outstanding Graduate in Chemistry, LMU

Volunteer Experiences and Professional Memberships

2010-present Member of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry

2004-2005 President, MTNA student organization, CSULB

1997-1998 Officer, Student Affiliates of American Chemical Society,

LMU

Selected Publications

immunoprecipitation of 22 kDa human growth hormone spiked into human

urine. Drug Test Analysis, 2009, 1, 441-446.
