Professional Experience
HBM Partners (Cayman) Ltd. 2004 - 2013
Director of Technology and Infrastructure
Recruited after a category 5 hurricane decimated the company's technical
and infrastructure assets and mandated to define, plan, execute, and
control a multi-phased initiative to allow the company to recover from a
catastrophe that drove many similar organizations out of business. I
proceeded as follows:
Phase One: Rapidly resumed operations.
> Led a 5-member team to enable critical tasks in 3 days with full
operations in 60 days. Adopted agile methods, serving the dual role of
scrum master and technical SME, to resume operations.
> Designed temporary solution with tents, emergency power generators, and
satellite communications for voice and internet connectivity. To expedite
recovery in emergency circumstances, salvaged, cannibalized, rebuilt and
repurposed equipment as required by the circumstances.
> Managed expedited procurement of all required equipment and supplies from
the USA and the logistics of shipping and clearing customs.
> Spearheaded a successful effort to sublet extra capacity for a lucrative
rate of return to offset the massive losses the company had taken.
> Responded dynamically to ever changing priorities from stakeholders.
Phase Two: Established permanent operations with a $1.3M budget - on-time
and 8% under budget.
> Worked closely with C level executives to identify requirements and
define project charter. Established a formalized project management
approach to plan and execute a modernization initiative.
> Decomposed scope deliverables including network and electrical wiring,
security and access control systems, data center, client computers, and
outfitting office space.
> Used bottom up estimating techniques to establish realistic budget and
schedule baselines.
> Gained senior management trust by employing well-defined metrics that
enabled precise earned value management forecasts.
> Identified, negotiated, and administered contracts for construction and
IT services.
> Monitored the execution of work and controlled iterative change
management as needed while minimizing scope creep.
HBM Partners (Cayman) Ltd. (cont'd)
Phase Three: Mitigated risk and ensured reliable recovery with Disaster
Preparation & Recovery Systems.
> Performed qualitative and quantitative risk management planning to
identify threats to business continuity that required addressing.
> Defined Emergency Recovery procedures for a company with no processes in
place. Created robust preparation procedures for such issues as
assignments and responsibilities, communications, and a controlled
shutdown.
> Enabled a mobile workforce with an offshore, cloud based redundant data
center with real-time data replication.
> Designed and implemented an array of F5 LTM load balancers to maintain
data integrity of data services with six sigma levels of availability.
> Managed development of systems and procedures that were successfully
deployed during another hurricane with a total downtime of only 2 hours.
Phase Four: Supported technical services essential to business success,
business operations, and core business processes.
> As the project was closing, transitioned into managing operations and
expanded IT service and telecom offerings. Analyzed company's growth
patterns to ensure sufficient technology capacity. Evaluated emerging
tools and practices for potential inclusion in technical architecture.
> Managed a team of 5 direct reports with an overall responsibility of 20
resources tasked with executing on-going maintenance, upgrades,
expansion, monitoring and configuration management.
> Served as the liaison between the executive and technical sides of the
business, identifying and extracting requirements from stakeholders and
translating them into a plan with technical feasibility.
> Conducted both technical and physical security risk audits to identify
and mitigate risks, and to develop and execute risk response strategies.
> Reviewed fitness and efficiency of the IT systems of candidate investment
companies and reported my findings and recommendations to senior
management.
> Analyzed and upgraded WAN connectivity to European branch offices to
improve throughput, reliability, and security.
> Prepared, justified and controlled budget for operations, quality control
and system enhancement.
