Data Scientist: Analytics & Predictive Modelling - Risk Management - Network Theory - Database Design

Expertise

I am a highly motivated individual with an extensive background in quantitative analysis to support business decisions. I

have built and continue to create database driven risk management systems that integrate on-the-ground information,

geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) information. With expertise in complex network theory and

analysis, as well as a wide range of data analysis and modelling techniques, I bring together data, relevant database and

mapping technology, statistical modelling, and data visualization techniques to support business strategy and reduce

risks. I am an experienced quantitative analyst, biologist, project manager and software developer leading mixed teams

of analysts, programmers, GIS specialists, and stakeholders.

Relevant Skills

Analytics, Predictive Modelling, Programming and Information Design: Advanced statistics (linear models, logistic

regression, multivariate analysis, neural networks, fuzzy logic, fuzzy clustering, graphical models, decision trees, KNN,

network analysis, Monte Carlo methods), visual design for reporting, user interface design, algorithm design; code for

SQL generators and spatial queries, statistical data processing, pivot table and data cube frameworks; spatial data and

database integration. Proficient in Python, SQL, R, and Matlab for analytical programming. Familiar with ArcGIS, JAVA, C,

VB.

Application Development, Project Management and Mentoring: Project management and budgeting. Code testing

and quality assurance. Liaising with clients to gather requirements and test software user interfaces. Mentoring

programmers and GIS specialists on spatial/database integration and data driven application design using object

oriented, relational, and functional approaches. Mentoring and teaching on data analysis, algorithm development and unit

testing. Application of SCRUM and Extreme Programming development methodologies. Experienced lecturer and

mentor, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Environmental Information System Design: Environmental monitoring survey and sampling techniques, experimental

design, forest inventory, growth and yield, ecoinformatics, ecological network analysis. Relational and dimensional (OLAP)

design; business intelligence (BI) and data warehousing concepts from design through implementation; requirements and

specifications gathering; UML for visual design communication with technical teams and project stake-holders.

Career Highlights

Development of spatially explicit predictive modelling software to predict flooding risk for the Canadian insurance industry.

Development of Actuarial Risk Management System for Forest Plantations for a consortium of forest companies and

government agencies across northern BC and AB to minimize plantation failure risk.

Development of multi-scale and multi-resource spatially referenced Forest Inventory Warehouse and analysis system with

a map based visual interface, for a privately owned BC lumber company partnered with the BC Ministry of Forests.

Development of Stand Structure Compiler (with Ian Moss) for the Canadian Wildlife Service. Stand structure is a

quantitative approach to classifying complex forest stands for resource management purposes.

Experience

2012 - Present. Statistical Modeling Analyst, Tesera Systems Inc. Development of spatially explicit predictive risk

models. Data architect responsible for design and implementation of risk analytics system, automation of analytics

applications, as well as development of staff training in analytics (courses and documents).

2007 - 2012. Ph.D. Candidate, University of Calgary Computer Science Department. Application of ecological network

modelling techniques to complex networks in the environment, biology, and technology.

2007-2008. Sessional Instructor and Course Coordinator. CPSC 203. University of Calgary Computer Science

Department. Course curriculum design, implementation and delivery including a new online lab manual for a large service

course. Management of multiple instructors and teaching assistants.

2001 - 2007. Founding Partner (with Ian Moss), Software Architect and Analytical Programming, Harmeny Systems Ltd.

Business focus was software development for database driven decision support systems for environmental

management.

1990 - 2007. Principal, Scientificals Consulting and Scientificals Design. Focused on model and information system

development for forest regeneration, growth and yield, and forest resource inventory systems specializing in custom

software development and modelling, data analysis and database design, and training forestry personnel in the above

areas. Earlier work focussed on seed propagation methods and quality control systems for native plant species.

Selected Examples of Analytical Software

I hold the copyright for the following analytical software systems:

XAYA -- Python based scripting language toolkit that integrates database and spatial query primitives, statistical

primitives and graphs as the basis for developing custom statistical applications on databases and networks. I am

currently using it as the core to automate analytics application development.

LifeLine -- Java based simple graphical database access, automated query generation and summary tool for managers

to explore large forest monitoring databases.

Actfor --VB based actuarial risk management system for forestry plantations.

Books, Articles, and Technical Reports

Industrial technical reports and academic publications list available on request. I have authored and co-authored

numerous technical reports and journal publications on environmental issues, biology, seed propagation, data analysis,

and computer science. I am lead author on the book, “Native Woody Plant Seed Collection Guide for British Columbia.”

published by the BC Ministry of Forests, available at http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hti/nativeseedguide/nativeseedguide.htm.
