Is is possible to predict the outcome of NFL football games?
2012 to Present
Members:Lexy Srouji, Pablo Escalera, Bobby Bender, Luz Mora
As a team, we collected data based on 2012 NFL football statistics and created an econometric
model/equation using the following independent variables: receiving yards, rushing yards, takeaways,
giveaways, redzone efficiency, average yards per play, homefield advantage, and third down conversions.
These carefully selected variables gave estimated betas provide interesting results in regards to what factors
have the largest impact in the final outcome of a game. Examining the betas reveals that, from the
independent variables chosen for this model, the top three with the largest impact are third down conversions,
red zone efficiency, and yards per play. The nature of the model gave an opportunity to test its effectiveness.
To test the model, there was an attempt to predict the game outcomes of this current NFL season. The success
rate is approximately 80%.
Effects of Tourism on Musicians and Music Culture in San Diego County
2011 to Present
Members:Lexy Srouji, Alex Okihiro
The primary research objective was to determine the effects of tourism (if any) on professional musicians and
music culture in San Diego County. Therefore, the natural focus of the field research was any area in which
there was an intersection of tourism and music within the county. This led to two distinct methods of study: a
series of field observations at tourist venues in the county that feature live music and personal interviews with
a sampling of local musicians who work within the tourist industry. This combination of research methods
allowed us to get a more comprehensive picture of the central question this research sought to examine.

Given the results from the interviews conducted, it is clear that tourism is a powerful force, economically,
socially, and politically. In terms of music culture, tourism can change the demand for certain types of music
and musicians seeking to entertain, adapt to fit that demand, consciously or not. In economic terms, the
tourism industry creates thousands of jobs in the county, including those for professional musicians. And
finally in terms of well-being of professional musicians, tourism has not been shown to have much significant
impact, but a revised method of inquiry may change this in future research.
