Dear Human Resources Representative or Actuarial Recruiter,
I am a recent graduate from IUPUI earning a bachelor’s degree in both Pure Mathematics and Economics
in order to prepare for a career in actuarial science. As such, I am constantly looking for employment or
internship opportunities that will help me be successful post-graduation. My qualifications for such an
opportunity include: strong mathematical and analytical skills, leadership experience, communication
skills, and computer science skills including a proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
One of my strongest qualifications is my analytical skill. I have completed over 60 credit hours of math
and statistics courses. I have taken applied math and statistical courses as well as courses that have
focused on pure mathematics with an emphasis on proving theorems. Although proofing skills are not
directly applicable to actuarial work, they do foster creative thinking and a comfort in dealing with
problems that do not have standardized solutions. In addition to analytical skills, I am extremely
comfortable communicating mathematics. I have worked as a tutor at the Mathematics Assistance Center
on the IUPUI campus for many semesters. I have tutored many different math classes in a broad range of
skill levels. I am equally comfortable with explaining a mathematical result in detail as I am
summarizing it as succinctly as possible. In addition to mathematics, I am an economics major as well
with 32 credit hours of study. Much of my skill in Microsoft Excel was developed in a course in
econometrics which focused on statistical regression.
I have previously mentioned my leadership skills. These were both developed and honed in the United
States Navy. I enlisted after high school and spent most of my four year contract onboard USS
Wadsworth FFG 9. The Wadsworth was an Oliver Hazard Perry class of guided missile frigates named
for Commodore Alexander S. Wadsworth. She portrayed the USS Reuben James FFG 57 in the movie
The Hunt for Red October. Onboard the Wadsworth I was a Logistics Specialist in charge of the repair
parts storeroom. I supervised three other enlisted men in the issue and stowage of millions of dollars
worth of repair parts, tracking inventory, and posting receipts. I also held collateral duties including
preparation of inventory and financial documents for the supply officer and was a purchasing agent for
procurement of items not available in the naval supply system. To further my leadership skills, most
recently I have supervised fellow tutors at the Math Assistance Center at IUPUI. I am currently a tutor at
the Math Assistance Center on the IUPUI campus and am spending all my available free time studying for
exam P, after recently passing exam FM.
Sincerely,
Danial L. Sellers
