• Designed the Electrical Layout and Embedded C Control Code for a Prototype Handheld Three
Wavelength Medical Laser. PIC24H series Microcontroller supervised a Constant Current Source
for the DPSS Laser, and the PI Temperature Control Loop that was accurate to within +/- 0.3 C of
setpoint. The working prototype was designed, assembled, and integrated in 6 weeks.
• Designed a Prototype Laser Rangefinder / Target Designator System which consisted of a
System Control Board, Detector Board, Laser Diode Driver Boards, and an OLED Display.
MPLAB IDE provided the environment for designing the Embedded C Control Code and during
integration, stepping through the code by operating the System Controller in Debug mode.
Demonstrated the ability to design hardware and firmware within project time and cost limitations.
These constraints required the design to utilize a 4 to1 Bus Mux with the System Controller UART
for peripheral supervisory communications to the legacy Laser Diode Driver Boards.
Standard signal conditioning design was used to convert the differential outputs (LVPECL &
LVDS) of the optical receivers into single ended TTL inputs for the Time of Flight Device.
The system controller firmware was written to determine the ranging data from output
of the Time of Flight device and output the data into the appropriate format for a color display.
Testing and debugging revealed greater T0 detector sensitivity was necessary. A second
Detector Board to interface for the T0 detector was adapted into to the System Control Board.
The Multilayer PCBs were designed with OrCAD Schematic Capture / PCB Layout, and
fabricated through close technical correspondence with the board manufacturer.
