M.TECH PROJECT

INSTITUTE FOR PLASMA RESEARCH (IPR) BHAT VILLAGE GANDHINAGAR

Project Details: Absolute Measurement of Neutron Yield of 14MeV, D-T Neutron Generator, by using Water Activation

Technique.

Abstract:

Neutron activation with water flow based on the O (n, p) N nuclear reaction. A water containing loop in the laboratory

was irradiated by 14 MeV neutrons flux produced by a sealed neutron generator. An experimental setup consisting of water

pipeline running between the neutron generator and a fully shielded and collimated NaI (TI) spectrometer is used for this

purpose. Water when irradiated with 14MeV neutrons gamma photon having energy 6.128 MeV (67.06%) and 7.115 MeV

(4.94%) From the N daughter nucleus which is measured with NaI (TI) spectrometer. From the measured Gamma

intensity the D-T neutron yield is estimated. For this purpose the NaI (TI) spectrometer is calibrated for its absolute

efficiency and compared and verified by MCNP (Monte Carlo N-Particle code) Calculation.

Visited various DAE units across all over India like TAPS, RAPS, NAPS, IPR, BARC etc.

Participated in workshop on “civilian nuclear energy”on January 9, 2010 organised by IIT Kanpur.
