SOFTWARE ENGINEERING PROFESSIONAL
A versatile, self motivated, engineering professional with a recognized
ability to identify and implement creative solutions to complex technical
problems.
Brings a "start up" sense of urgency towards new development, with very
strong "out of the box" thinking skills, to improve code resiliency,
performance, and functionality. This same urgency extends towards
addressing existing issues, doing whatever is necessary to arrive at a root
cause and ultimately devising creative solutions.
Competent in all areas of software engineering including: needs analysis,
prototyping, functional and design specifications, project planning,
implementation, and life cycle support.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
EMC CORPORATION, Hopkinton, MA 1995 - 2013
Principal Engineer
GOOD
> Perform 68030 microcode analysis for designing and developing online
engineering documentation, including Code Flow diagrams, buffer
utilization, and data structure identification
> Provided SCSI protocol analysis for new software feature designs and
design change impact on various UNIX hosts, third-party CASE tool
evaluation
> Provided design analysis for the initial foundation for EMC's Storage
Systems ucode APIs. The tenets of those designs continue to be the
basis of all new APIs incorporated, even after 5 generations of
storage systems.
BETTER
Developed the following:
> Multi-platform SNMP clients, agents, and MIBs for integration with
external management frameworks and MIB browsers, including HP
OpenView, Tivoli NetView, and CA Unicenter.
> Multi-platform plug-in software that provides the capability to manage
EMC products within external management frameworks including HP
OpenView, Tivoli NetView, and CA Unicenter.
> An SNMP Plug-in for EMC's Solutions Enabler Event daemon for
converting and sending events as SNMP traps, while maintaining a
private MIB for lightweight browsing via a private port.
> The original SNMP infrastructure supporting the above that is still
deployed across several internal management products and was used in
"one offs" to provide SNMP support for custom applications.
BEST
Developed the following:
> Configuration management APIs for the Clariion storage systems that
have since become the "workhorse" for EMC's SNIA SMI-S Provider.
> A daemon for EMC's Solutions Enabler chartered to provide a single
point of access to the storage systems, manage and recovering host and
subsystem resources, provide QOS load balancing across SCSI device
access and remote links, and increase application layer performance by
utilizing a data cache or delayed task execution.
> An emulation daemon for internal and third party development
organizations to simulate storage system passive and active control
requests and reduce the need for physical lab storage systems for
development purposes, saving millions in annual equipment
capitalization expenses. This software was patented in 2009, Patent
#7,478,026.
WHOA!
> Developed a novel solution to allow EMC customers to remotely download
EMC Service Packs and software upgrades to a Symmetrix Controller,
facilitating remote upgrades by Tech Support rather than requiring an
onsite trip using hard copy media. The annual estimated cost savings
is $30 million.
> Championed Performance and Scalability initiatives for EMC's Solutions
Enabler product client/server application environment, including:
. Conduct in-depth analysis of existing implementation(s);
. Optimizations of existing protocols and implementations resulting
in a 30% performance gain over a high latency network;
. Prototype solutions for proof of concept for alternative
implementations;
. generate functional, design, implementation, and test
documentation;
. develop benchmarking procedures, tools, and scripts for measuring
general product performance between prior GA releases as well as
incremental development releases and QE code drops, plus testing
procedures, tools, and scripts for measuring success
. Delivered solutions that reduced application run time over a high
latency network from 25 minutes to 7 seconds;
. Delivered solutions that reduce overall memory use by 60% on the
server host and upwards of 90% on the client host.
