1/2013 to Present: Founded GeekGaps.com, created and patented the concept, built the website,
and completed 3 products: Transparent Walls, E911 lighting, and deployed Digital Graffiti to the
city of Nice, France. This utilizes a java MSE location service, a php LAMPP server, and an iOS
Objective C augmented reality mobile client application. Digital Graffiti works as a billboard
anywhere within the open Wifi of the city where people can look through their mobile devices to
place and view virtual signage of any size, visibile up to 20 feet away with an expiration date. (6
patents pending from GeekGaps.com.)
2/2012 to 1/2013: National Virtual Incubator Evangelist across the UK, Innovator, and seeder of
Cisco Gap opportunities. Participated on 2 FP7 EU projects to motivate partners to join the
consortium project, inspired the exploitation and the mobile application differentiation for the Tube
Wait Times. Skunkworks key participant in LightOverIP.
3/2011 to 1/2012: (Evangelist/Inventor/Architect): NDCS: Evangelized the NetLurkers
innovation model “Innovation without a budget” externally across the mobile developer community
at the MoMo (Mobile Mondays) conferences across the US establishing an easier ‘on ramp’ for
developers to engage with Cisco by seeding new enterprise mobile “apps” that have relevance to
Cisco services in the network. Responsible for the Olympic 2012 UK Social Connectivity initiative
Peter Michael Gits
for Cisco at the Walk In The Park (WITP) and the House with Digital Graffiti and facial recognition
utilizing sponsored NetLurkers prototypes. Sponsoring, innovating, evangelizing, and partnering
with the broader mobile development community creating new target vertical opportunities for
Cisco and our partners by pushing (MSE) indoor location services into the cloud with a Service
Provider play for things like Easy Gate, an augmented reality mobile app service to guide you to
your departure gate and “Point of Choice” grocery mobile app aisle sorter which creates new
linkages between consumer and food manufacturers using an AdSense opt-in service while
searching for your item.
6/2010 to 2/2011: (Architect) Computing Platforms & Mobility D&E: Responsible for the
Innovation Track. Founded NetLurkers project where I created a partnership with multiple cross-
bu teams, 3rd party external developers, and our team’s 20% innovation time to produce innovations
that could be revenue shared through the “Freemium” model outlined by Christ Anderson in his
book “Free”. Led two “smell tests” in 10-12 weeks. These are rolled out at Cisco as free services
with the premium services to be quickly followed, eventually to be rolled out to external customers.
2009 to 6/2010, (Consulting Systems Engineer) Connected Building Systems Business Unit. This
is the green initiative at Cisco where I am building the interface from our energy management
building system and coupling it with the US Energy Star program, converging multiple buildings
into a single universal view and controlling it at the NOC. I am responsible for the interoperability
between this product and any external systems that are not building controllers or HVAC systems.
My first integration was with the Energy Wise intitiative within Cisco to granularly control these
building systems through the network regardless of how these downstream systems are connected.
2008 to 2009, Cisco Angel Network Founder. Created this program with the guidance and
encouragement of Flavio Bonomi and Joel Bion from the Advanced Architecture and Research
Business Unit with noted board of directors like Padmasree Warrior. To create and extend Cisco’s
disruptive reach across the world by igniting 1000 small fires in a controlled burn. This
collaboration involves all business units from Cisco and asks for their participation in knowledge
and manpower to assist part-time in launching entirely new ecosystems throughout the globe. This
program taps the expertise of employees within Cisco to align with the specific needs of the startup.
This effort is targeted to fund over 25 startups in its first year and 5 of the first 6 have passed our
board of director’s approval. This was my passion and 2nd job at Cisco since January of 2008.
2008 to 2009, (Technical Leader II) PMBUCustomer Centric Engineering. (With the acquisition
of Securent and the folding of NAIBU, the team was realigned towards the end of 2008.) I focused
on the Policy Entitlement Product and aligning the customer’s needs while leading multiple
ehnancement working groups to successful implementation and deployment. Streamlined a new
collaborative portal to track customer engagements, exceptions, and enhancments. This model
alleviated much of the time delays in relaying errors, articulating bugs back to development, and
eliminating out of date excel spreadsheets that were used in email exchanges between the customer
and Cisco.
2007 to 2008, NAIBU, Network Application Infrastructure (Technical Leader II, innovator)
AON was realigned to now become Network Application Infrastructure BU. I was Instrumental in
creating SIMON/Jackalope as the basis for Veyron as the architectural keystone for the team and
business unit moving forward. Refactored the Pcube (2 year old acquisition) classification machine
into a Deep Message Inspection component. Ported numerous products onto the Linux platform in
an effort to componentize and reuse existing Cisco intellectual property.
Peter Michael Gits
2005 to 2007, AON, (Technical Leader II, adjacent product development) played the primary role in
bringing two new products to market: Nice Systems (VOIP wiretapping) and Jabber Inc (Extended
Network Presence – 360 degree). Moved my team from RCBU for architectural reasons, to
intercept traffic and perform deep message inspection on it.
2003 to 2005, Rich Communications Business Unit, (Technical Leader II) Leveraged SI and its
underpinnings to catapult the distributed development of the next generation conferencing systems
(Latitude Acquisition). Thought leader responsible for Cisco’s Presence Strategy within Cisco.
Showcased what is possible in this arena. Built a Shared Distributed Memory Map which was
adopted across multiple BU’s throughout Cisco, precursor to DHT (Distributed Hash Tables).
2001 to 2003, Voice Technology Group, (Technical Leader) Inventor of the Spanish Inquisition
project, submitted 6 patents based on the technology. (Poster child for the promotion of the patent
process within Cisco.) Shared responsibility for getting over 1 million dollars of Sun’s largest and
fastest equipment to sponsor the SI development effort. When Cisco launched the Distributed Call
Manager it was based on the SI project.
6/1999 to 2001, Global Strategic Applications Technology, (Architect) Defined the infrastructure
roadmap that married Call Center applications and Unified Messaging with IP telephony. My first
effort was to deliver an alternate architecture for distributed devices that was based on "Jini" from
Sun.
1/1998 to 6/1999, Advanced Technology Infrastructure,(contractor/ Engineer) Evaluated
enterprise vendor tools to be used within Cisco's web sites, both CCO and CEC. If there were no
tools available on the market, I would spec out the desired requirements from the development
community and build them. I designed and built the Servlet 2.1 implementation for Oracle
Application Server within Cisco. This was first piloted by the HR team using the CAP tool. For
this effort I was awarded the "Outstanding Contractor" award for Technical Innovation. Prior to
this development effort, I was also on the team that won another recognition award for selecting and
implementing an Enterprise Workflow solution at Cisco. I was appointed as a representative for
Cisco to sit on Sun's Java Development Advisory Board.
9/1997 to 1/1998, Technical Response Center, (CEC Administrator, Tools Architect) Coordinated
the support and development efforts for 8 different web based development tools and architectures.
Worked closely with application developers to solve their urgent and long term issues. Established
additional lines of communication between the disparate development teams across Cisco to
properly address a coordinated development effort. Came to Cisco because of their network
expertise and I needed to learn the Internet from the inside out. (I paid for my own travel expenses
to be at Cisco while contracting; I was living in Los Angeles at the time.)
CISCO END
5/1996 to 9/1997 Zymed Medical Instrumentation, Inc. Camarillo, CA: (Director of Software
Development/Holter Product Development) I migrated the entire software organization toward
COM, DCOM, and ActiveX components using Visual C++ (MFC and MIDL) on the NT 4.0
platform. Designed and developed the networking middleware components in DCOM for Zymed’s
Telemetry System. Authored a product called “ZyBit” that created wide area network allowing a
remote doctor’s office to send encrypted EKG data to a centralized scanning service. The report
was later returned by the tech in an email. This necessitated the holter recorders becoming digital
Peter Michael Gits
and launched a significant rise in the scanning service providers as the target market in a mature
industry.
8/1993 to 5/1996 Corning - Nichols Institute, San Juan Capistrano, CA (contractor/ Architect)
Replaced the existing Lab Information System "Pathnet" running on DEC/VAX with our own
internal client server system for the Clinical Studies Group. Replaced and interfaced all instruments
with our own links and completely revamped the patient charting. Authored an original design for
the development of a Serial Engine using MFC C++ class objects and spear headed the
implementation to all instruments across the company. I instituted a new Chart generation program
which ran on multiple clients and utilized OLE 2.1 and an automation controller to generate all
client’s charts using a decoupled architecture that was a combination of Word 6.0, Excel, Microsoft
Visual C++, and Sybase.
10/1988 to 1/1994 Midwest Information Systems, Inc. Hillside, Illinois (Founder, CTO)
I performed all phases of new product development and strategy coordination. I was directly
responsible for a twenty man development team. Built Industrial Microscopy Systems as well as
Medical Telemetry Systems (PAX-it, Picture Archival and Transmission). (They are still in
business today: http://www.paxit.com )
1/1988 to 10/1988 Systems Plus, Inc. DesPlaines, Illinois (Software Analyst/Programmer)
Designed & supervised the development of a code generation suite in "C" which would output and
compile COBOL code under UNIX. WYSIWYG suite of tools allowing a program manager the
ability to paint screens and reports without having to understand a programming language.
10/1986 to 1/1988 Auxton Computer Enterprises, Inc. Schaumburg, Illinois (contractor:
Software Analyst / Programmer) I was assigned to AT&T, CitiCorp, and Baxter Travenol where I
spent most of my time developing expert systems, coding in "C" under UNIX. Some of the noted
projects were: SUPERSTARS, AT&T's Ordering System for the US & Canada called CAPS, and an
Electronic Data Interchange system utilizing ANSI X.12 called ASAP.
1/ 1984 to 10/1986 IBM, Inc. Oak Brook, Illinois (Administrative Assistant/gopher: 20 hrs/wk
while in college) Worked in a branch office, made collection calls, answered phones and built a
DOS based furniture and fixtures inventory program.
