The program consists of 2 elective surgery courses that meet every 6-8 weeks during the clinical year. The didactic

segment of the electives involves case-based scenarios focusing on the management of surgical patients. The

laboratory component consists of skills training such as suturing, knot tying, placement of central lines, and chest

tubes. In addition, the program provides the opportunity to conduct pig model surgery of the following procedures:

splenectomy, nephrectomy, small bowel resection with anastomosis, lap cholecystectomy and endoscopic vein

harvesting on simulators. The program is directed by Dr. Juliet Lee, of the GWU department of surgery who provides

one-on-one guidance to us, the students, selected for this competitive program.

Organized and conducted healthy living seminars with the families of a transitional housing facility with a focus on

balanced eating, exercise, and health maintenance for parents and children. Seminars included topics such as heart

disease, diabetes mellitus, stress management, and talking to kids about controversial topics. Compiled health

information packets for parents to bring to medical appointments for their families.

Kids Against Hunger – Student Leader September 2011
