JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Service Worker II – Service Department
Potential Interactions: Drinking Water Plant, Water Distribution, Sanitary Sewer, Street, Parks and Recreation
Potential Supervisors: Superintendents and Operations Managers of Service Department
Definition/Purpose:
The purpose of this position is to serve the public by performing the semi-skilled work necessary to ensure the effective operation of the City of North Canton’s Service Department across various sections including Water Distribution, Sanitary Sewer, Street, Parks, and Recreation.
Required Characteristic Work (a representative but not exhaustive list) dependent upon assignment:
1. Promote and maintain a safe work environment and follow safe work habits to ensure the safety of the city employee, co-workers, and the public.
2. Perform all work-related tasks listed in the job descriptions for less senior positions.
3. Proficient knowledge of ditch safety equipment, trench box use, and safety practices around machinery with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) use.
4. General knowledge of and ability to operate all equipment (including pneumatic) for excavations during waterline installation and/or repairs.
5. Operate a salt spreader and/or snowplow as required.
6. Operate as a flagman and set up barricades and lights during emergency situations.
7. Operate and properly maintain city equipment, such as manual and power hand tools, power maintenance equipment, four-wheel drive pick-up trucks, and CDL class vehicles.
8. Perform water main taps with a tapping machine.
9. Assist in the inventory of equipment and supplies.
10. Perform general tasks with all city vehicles, equipment, and machinery, including loaders, backhoes, trackhoes, dump trucks, etc.
11. Repair main and service breaks, including the use of loader and backhoe front bucket and skid steer with road saw.
12. Basic operation of trackhoe and backhoe for digging.
13. Knowledge of water systems and valves.
14. Attentively observe more senior city employees as they perform tasks that the less senior city employee has not yet mastered, readily assisting them when instructed to do so.
15. Perform other related work as instructed.

7. Perform physical labor, including carrying heavy loads, climbing up and down ladders, and climbing into and out of holes.
8. Perform to the best of one’s abilities and to learn new skills.
9. Strong organizational skills inclusive of organizing vehicle to have proper equipment for assigned jobs.
10. Mechanical and electrical aptitudes.
11. Experience with hand tools.
12. Experience with operating and maintaining small engines.
13. Knowledge and practice of work zone safety principles and techniques.
14. Demonstrate job knowledge and performance that a city employee of more than four years should be able to exhibit.
15. Require less supervision and work in a more proactive manner than a less senior city employee.
16. Maintain a sense of aesthetic awareness and proactively respond to items requiring attention.
17. Basic knowledge of the component parts and performance limits of all city vehicles, equipment, and machinery, as well as how to perform preventative maintenance.
18. High school diploma or equivalent.
19. Valid Ohio CDL.
Reporting Relationships:
A city employee serving in this position will occasionally be called upon to lead a group of less senior city employees.
Years of service will be reviewed if all qualifications are met.
