Job Description

We are a Charlotte area Plumbing and HVAC contracting operation, seeking a strategic and detail-oriented financial leader to serve as our Senior Controller, overseeing all financial operations of a growing employee-owned (ESOP). This role is responsible for the integrity of financial reporting, budgetary oversight, strategic financial planning, and compliance — with a specialized focus on the nuances of operating within an ESOP framework. The ideal candidate will bring both tactical accounting proficiency and forward-looking financial leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Strategy

Provide strategic guidance on company financials, long-range planning, and profitability.

Advise ownership and executive team on capital structure, investments, and risk.

Lead financial planning, forecasting, and modeling activities across business units.

Accounting Oversight

Manage the day-to-day accounting functions including general ledger, A/R, A/P, payroll, and job costing.

Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes.

Oversee preparation of internal financial statements, dashboards, and external reporting.

Budgeting & Controls

Develop and manage annual operating budgets in collaboration with operations leadership.

Maintain robust internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP and company policy.

Monitor and analyze financial performance indicators and proactively address variances.

ESOP Compliance & Reporting

Coordinate with third-party administrators (TPAs) and trustees on ESOP financial reporting, allocations, and annual valuations.

Ensure compliance with ERISA, IRS, and DOL regulations.

Educate leadership and employees on the financial aspects of the ESOP structure and impact.

Tax, Audit & Banking

Coordinate external CPA audit and tax preparation processes.

Manage relationships with lenders and oversee compliance with bank covenants.

Ensure proper management of cash flow, debt service, and capital expenditures.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or MBA preferred.

7–15+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including leadership roles.

Experience in the construction or mechanical contracting industry strongly preferred.

Prior experience with ESOPs or employee-owned companies highly desirable.

Expertise in job costing, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.

Proficient in construction accounting software - Spectrum preferred.

Exceptional leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
