Position Description:
The University of Louisville Kent School of Social Work is seeing an Academic Advisor III. The Academic Advisor III is responsible for providing direct academic advising and support to Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW) students (online and campus) through academic planning, learning strategy support, graduation planning, and monitoring student progression toward MSSW. In collaboration with administrators, faculty, and other institution members, this position executes all aspects critical to the students' retention and persistence, including services related to orientation, registration, core curriculum, field placement, and learning and degree planning assessment. The Academic Advisor III serves as the primary contact for students and is responsible for providing comprehensive and complex academic advising; communicating policies and procedures that ensure compliance with the MSSW program and Graduate School rules, regulations, and deadlines. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Advise MSSW students in course selection, navigation, tracking of degree and program requirements, and accessing appropriate academic opportunities, offering advising services through appointment, drop-in hours, email, virtual, and group formats.
Regularly explore and engage in strategies and initiatives that strengthen multicultural and underrepresented MSSW student's retention and persistence to graduation.
Establishes rapport with MSSW students, administrators, and faculty to effectively serve as a liaison in finding creative solutions and pathways for overall goals and degree completion.
Provide non-clinical counseling and crisis intervention for students experiencing stressful situations that impact academic performance. Collaborating with administrators, faculty, and other members of the institution to provide critical incident management.
Conduct the review and evaluation process of degree progression, completing periodic and final degree audit evaluations to ensure that MSSW students have completed all necessary graduation requirements.
Identify resources and programs through collaboration with counterparts within the university system to provide students with greater access to information and resources.
Plan, design, and deliver workshops centered on academic strategies and resources to increase student retention.
Facilitates the preparation of materials for academic review meetings to provide additional information and context to the Academic Review Committee.
Identify student trends and make strategic recommendations for new programming and resources to the leadership team.
Assist with commencement ceremonies and manage the accuracy of student information in commencement bulletins and programs.
Collaboratively assist in developing a team-based approach to student services and provide expertise and assistance in graduate academic affairs services and other programmatic areas.
Maximize the use of technology that enhances the efficient delivery of services/programs to students, including specific computer applications and programs utilized by the department.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Social Work, or closely related field
At least two (2) years of experience in academic advising, student services, or higher education administration.
Proven clear and efficient written and interpersonal communication skills, both electronically and in person
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with student information systems or advising platforms (e.g., PeopleSoft, Navigate, Slate, etc.).
Previous advising experience in a graduate or professional program, preferably in social work or a related human services discipline.
Familiarity with Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accreditation standards and the competencies required of MSW students.
Experience advising students from diverse backgrounds, including first-generation graduate students, working professionals, and online learners.
Familiarity with the signature pedagogy of social work education and a solid understanding of licensure pathways and regulatory requirements within the discipline.
Ability to develop and deliver workshops or group advising sessions.
Target Compensation Maximum:$68,900.00
Target Compensation Minimum:$45,900.00
Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
