Job Overview
The Senior SQL Server Database Administrator is responsible for administering, configuring, maintaining, and optimizing enterprise Microsoft SQL Server environments across on-premises and Azure platforms. This role ensures database performance, availability, security, and recoverability while partnering with development, architecture, and IT teams to support critical applications and complex technical solutions.
Job Duties
Install, configure, patch, upgrade, and administer SQL Server instances across production, staging, development, on-premises, and Azure environments.
Monitor database health, resource utilization, availability, and performance; perform advanced tuning of queries, indexes, configurations, and system resources.
Troubleshoot and resolve blocking, deadlocks, performance issues, and other complex database problems, providing Tier III technical support for critical issues.
Design, implement, test, and maintain database backup, recovery, High Availability, and Disaster Recovery solutions, including Always On Availability Groups, Log Shipping, Failover Cluster Instances, and replication.
Develop and support Azure database architectures, including Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server hosted on Azure Virtual Machines.
Configure and support Azure database monitoring, backup, security, migration, and disaster recovery solutions using tools such as Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Azure Backup, and Azure Key Vault.
Implement database security controls, including role-based access, user and permission management, encryption, and security standards.
Support database migrations and integrations between on-premises SQL Server and Azure environments.
Partner with development teams on database architecture, schema and table design, data types, stored procedures, triggers, functions, T-SQL queries, and ETL workflows.
Develop T-SQL, PowerShell, and command-line scripts to automate database maintenance, monitoring, backups, integrity checks, statistics updates, and reporting.
Establish and maintain database architecture, data exchange, security, monitoring, configuration, migration, and development standards.
Create and maintain technical documentation covering installation, configuration, security, monitoring, migration, recovery, and database best practices.
Collaborate with IT Architecture, security, leadership, and development teams to develop solutions aligned with organizational requirements and security standards.
Contribute to solution design and business case development for database-related initiatives.
Develop database strategies and apply project planning principles to support business and technical objectives.
Mentor peers and lower-level staff through technical guidance, knowledge sharing, and documentation.
Participate in Disaster Recovery, Business Resumption, Incident Response, or similar response teams when assigned, including potential 24/7 operations at remote locations.
