Job Description

Key Responsibilities

Serve as a lead worker and coordinate the daily activities of water and wastewater treatment plant operators.

Plan and assign work, establish operating schedules, and coordinate maintenance and treatment activities.

Monitor treatment plant operations and make adjustments to ensure proper system performance.

Oversee processes including screening, lift stations, settling, activated sludge, chlorination, recirculation, sludge digestion, filtration, pumping, and related treatment systems.

Monitor and adjust chemical treatment processes, dosing pumps, chlorine systems, and other treatment equipment.

Conduct routine sampling and testing of water and wastewater to monitor treatment effectiveness and quality.

Perform and/or oversee chemical testing, including pH, temperature, chlorine, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, and settleable solids.

Collect samples and coordinate laboratory testing when required.

Maintain laboratory equipment, testing supplies, records, and documentation.

Inspect, operate, maintain, and repair treatment plant equipment and systems.

Coordinate preventative maintenance, equipment repairs, and replacement of worn or damaged components.

Maintain pumps, motors, blowers, compressors, valves, piping, meters, electrical controls, pressure systems, and related equipment.

Coordinate with technical personnel and contractors regarding plant operations, maintenance, repairs, and improvements.

Maintain accurate daily, weekly, and monthly operational records.

Prepare reports and documentation required for regulatory compliance.

Monitor operational expenses and assist with budget planning, purchasing, and tracking expenditures.

Develop recommendations for equipment, maintenance, staffing, and operational improvements.

Conduct facility safety inspections and identify potential hazards.

Ensure appropriate safety procedures are followed when handling chemicals, operating equipment, and working in confined spaces.

Train and provide guidance to employees regarding treatment plant operations, safety procedures, equipment use, and emergency protocols.

Maintain compliance with applicable environmental, safety, and water/wastewater regulations.

Oversee general maintenance of treatment facilities, structures, grounds, piping, fencing, and related infrastructure.

Operate hand and power tools and treatment plant equipment as necessary.

Participate in meetings, training, inspections, and operational planning activities.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Current Class 1 Wastewater Operator License and Class 1 Water Operator License required.

Valid driver's license required for positions involving operation of company or government vehicles.

Previous experience in water and/or wastewater treatment operations.

Experience leading, coordinating, or supervising employees preferred.

Strong knowledge of treatment plant processes, equipment, safety procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Ability to read and understand technical manuals, procedures, permits, and equipment documentation.

Strong computer skills and ability to maintain electronic records.

Ability to perform mathematical calculations and interpret operational data.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and concise reports.

Ability to troubleshoot equipment and treatment process issues.

Ability to work independently while effectively coordinating with a team.
