Job Description

Provides clinical and administrative support in a fast-paced medical clinic or ambulatory care setting. The Bilingual Medical Assistant conducts patient intake, measures and records vital signs, translates medical and administrative information fluently between English and Spanish, and assists healthcare providers with exams and procedures to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care.

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Care & Vital Signs

Patient Intake: Room patients, verify identity, and record chief complaints, current medications, allergies, and medical histories in English and/or Spanish.

Vital Signs Measurement: Accurately obtain, record, and evaluate core vital signs:

Blood Pressure (manual or automated)

Pulse Rate & Rhythm

Respiratory Rate

Body Temperature (oral, tympanic, temporal, or axillary)

Oxygen Saturation ($SpO_2$)

Height, Weight, and Body Mass Index (BMI)

Pain scale rating (0–10)

Triage & Escalation: Promptly recognize abnormal vital signs or signs of acute distress and immediately notify the attending physician or Registered Nurse.

Clinical Procedures: Assist providers during physical exams, minor procedures, and routine screenings (e.g., EKGs, vision tests, capillary blood glucose checks).

2. Bilingual Communication & Cultural Navigation

Provide fluent, accurate Spanish-to-English and English-to-Spanish interpretation for patients, families, and healthcare providers during rooming, intake, and routine clinical interactions.

Translate patient educational materials, discharge instructions, care plans, and pre-/post-procedure guidelines clearly and culturally appropriately.

Support Spanish-speaking patients in completing intake forms, consent documents, and health questionnaires.

3. Administrative & EHR Responsibilities

Input all vital signs, patient history, and clinical documentation accurately into the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system in real time.

Assist with scheduling follow-up appointments, obtaining lab results, and processing prescription refill requests under provider supervision.

Conduct outreach calls in Spanish/English for appointment reminders, lab follow-ups, and preventative care reminders.

4. Clinic Operations & Safety

Clean, sanitize, and stock patient exam rooms between visits following OSHA and infection control standards.

Ensure clinical diagnostic tools (e.g., sphygmomanometers, thermometers, pulse oximeters) are calibrated, functional, and properly maintained.

Adhere strictly to HIPAA regulations, patient privacy standards, and clinic safety guidelines.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent. Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.

Certifications

• Certified Medical Assistant (CMA / AAMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) preferred.

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR certification (Required).

Language Skills

Native or near-native fluency (speaking, reading, writing) in both English and Spanish; medical Spanish terminology knowledge required.

Technical Skills

Proficiency with EHR software (e.g., Epic, Cerner, eClinicalWorks) and basic office software.

Key Attributes

Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, high attention to detail, and ability to multitask in high-volume settings.
