Job summary

The CNC Mill Operator is responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of computer numerical control (CNC) milling machines to produce high-quality, precision parts in accordance with blueprints, technical drawings, and work orders. The operator must be able to read and interpret technical documents, perform quality inspections, and make machine adjustments to ensure parts meet exact specifications.

Responsibilities and duties

Set up and operate CNC milling machines to perform tasks such as drilling, cutting, and shaping of materials like metal and plastic.

Translate and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and CAD files to determine machine settings and tooling requirements.

Load and unload raw materials and secure workpieces in the machine using appropriate fixtures and attachments.

Monitor machine operations during production runs, making adjustments to speeds, feed rates, and tool offsets as needed to maintain product specifications.

Perform in-process quality control checks using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify part conformance.

Record and maintain accurate production data, quality logs, and other required documentation.

Perform routine and preventative machine maintenance, including cleaning, lubricating, and replacing worn tools or inserts.

Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues or minor machine malfunctions that may arise during the machining process.

Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Maintain a clean and organized work area throughout the shift.

Collaborate with team members and supervisors to optimize processes and communicate any production issues.

Required skills and qualifications

Technical skills

CNC Operation and Setup: Proven experience in setting up and operating CNC milling machines, including tool changes and fixture alignment.

Blueprint Reading: Strong ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and engineering specifications.

Precision Measurement: Proficient in using a variety of precision measuring instruments, such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges.

Mathematical Skills: Solid understanding of basic math, geometry, and conversions for measurement and tolerance calculations.

G-Code Familiarity: Competence in understanding and performing minor edits to G-code programs.

Mechanical Aptitude: Strong mechanical and technical problem-solving skills to troubleshoot issues.

Soft skills

Attention to Detail: Excellent eye for detail to ensure parts meet tight tolerances and quality standards.

Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities to address mechanical issues and process inefficiencies.

Communication: Effective verbal and written communication skills to document actions and report issues clearly.

Work Ethic: Reliability, strong work ethic, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Experience and education

Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent is required; vocational training or an associate degree in machining or a related field is a plus.

Experience: A minimum of 2–3 years of proven experience as a machine operator, with a focus on CNC milling, is typically preferred.

Physical requirements

Ability to stand for long periods of time and perform repetitive motions.

Capable of lifting and moving materials up to 50 pounds.

Sufficient visual acuity to read instruments, inspect parts, and detect machine malfunctions.

Manual dexterity and a steady hand for fine adjustments.
