Mississippi Attorney General’s Office Criminal Appeals Division
(Federal Habeas Team)
The Criminal Appeals Division is seeking an organized and dependable paralegal to provide legal and administrative support to four attorneys on its Federal Habeas Team, which represents the State of Mississippi in federal habeas corpus litigation challenging state criminal convictions and sentences in federal court.
The position primarily involves electronic court filing, organizing and maintaining case files and records, preparing documents and exhibits for filing, and providing day-to-day administrative support to the attorneys.
Primary Responsibilities
File pleadings and other documents in federal court using CM/ECF and/or PACER
Prepare documents, exhibits, and attachments for electronic filing
Download, organize, and maintain pleadings, court orders, records, and correspondence
Maintain electronic and paper case files
Obtain records and documents from courts, agencies, and attorneys
Track filing deadlines and assist with case management
Prepare routine correspondence and assist with document formatting, copying, scanning, and filing
Communicate with courts, clerks’ offices, the Mississippi Department of Corrections, attorneys, and other agencies as needed
Provide general administrative and secretarial support to the Federal Habeas Team
Handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel
Desirable Qualifications
Experience as a paralegal, legal assistant, or similar legal-support professional
Experience in a law office, court, government legal office, or similar environment
Prior experience filing documents in federal court through CM/ECF/PACER strongly preferred
Experience organizing and maintaining large legal or court records
Paralegal education, training, or certification
Compensation
Compensation is based on experience and Mississippi State Personnel Board guidelines.

The Attorney General's Office is the chief legal officer and advisor for the State of Mississippi on both civil and criminal matters. Her responsibility is to represent public officials and government agencies and to issue legal opinions that interpret State law. The Attorney General has the sole power under Mississippi law to bring or defend a lawsuit on behalf of the State. She acts as counsel to State agencies and defends them or brings suit on their behalf. Most importantly, the Office is charged with the representation of the people of the State of Mississippi.
