Part-Time Instructor, Adult Education (ESL/ABE) — Chesapeake College

Chesapeake College's Adult and Community Education Program is hiring part-time instructors to teach Adult Basic Education (ABE) and/or English as a Second Language (ESL) at community locations across Queen Anne, Kent, Caroline, Talbot, and Dorchester counties on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Classes are offered in-person and online.

ESL Instructor — Mon/Wed, 6:00–8:30 PM — Ridgely, MD (Caroline County), in-person

ESL Instructor — Tue/Thu, 10:00 AM–12:30 PM — Chestertown, MD (Kent County), in-person

ABE/Math Instructor — Tue/Thu, 5:30–8:00 PM — Cambridge, MD (Dorchester County), in-person

The Role

ESL instructors help adult students build speaking, reading, writing, and numeracy skills to advance their employment and participate more fully in their communities. Classes range from beginner to advanced and are sometimes multi-level. Instruction centers on language competency but can also include cultural knowledge, digital literacy, and other workplace- and community-relevant skills.

ABE instructors help adult students strengthen reading, writing, and numeracy across math, language arts, science, and social studies as they work toward a high school diploma via the GED. Instruction also supports students pursuing post-secondary education, skilled trades, college placement exams, and stronger digital, financial, and professional skills.

Most classes meet two evenings per week (Mon/Wed or Tue/Thu) for 2–2.5 hours; some morning sections are available depending on location and student need.

Compensation & Schedule

$26/hour for all positions

7.5 hours/week per class assignment, plus opportunities for substitute hours

Paid planning time, professional development, and peer support included

Requirements

Bachelor's degree

Strong command of English and basic math

Respectful, effective communication with adult learners from diverse backgrounds

Basic technology skills: video conferencing (Zoom) or online learning platforms for instruction; email, Excel, and an employee self-service portal for administrative tasks

Adapts teaching methods to meet varied student needs

Creates a classroom environment — physical and interpersonal — that supports learning

Communicates well with students, staff, and administration; coordinates with the assigned Student Navigator on orientation, testing, and other student support

Reliable with attendance records, timesheets, and other deadlines

Prior teaching experience or experience in multicultural settings is a plus but not required. We welcome candidates from other professions with transferable skills and will train the right people.

Eligibility

This is a grant-funded position; the number of classes and instructors depends on enrollment. Candidates must reside in Maryland or a contiguous state (Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, or Washington, D.C.) and be currently authorized to work in the U.S. Visa sponsorship is not available.
