Unit Overview

28 bed private Stepdown unit (3W)

Ratios: 1:4–5 (1:6 if MedSurg acuity)

Charting: Cerner transitioning to EPIC

Scrubs: Navy blue (jackets must also be navy)

Orientation: 2 shifts with preceptor

Float: May float to ICU as helping hands

Block scheduling allowed; director is highly supportive

Patient Population

Heavy cardiac: dysrhythmias, CVAs

Mix of Stepdown/PCU patients

Anything downgraded from ICU

Bipap, CPAP, High Flow (no sedation drips)

Clinical Requirements

2+ years recent Stepdown/PCU experience

Must read & interpret telemetry strips

Drip titration: Cardizem, Nitro, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Heparin

Insulin is set rate only

No sedation gtts

Must meet 50 mile radius rule

Support & Staffing

Day charge: no assignment

Night charge: may take assignment

CNAs: 2 per shift (none after 11 PM)

Hospitalist in house 24/7

Intensivist in ICU 7a–7p + on call

RT in house 24/7

Pharmacy in house 24/7

No IV team; ICU charge or director assists with difficult sticks

Scheduling

RN shifts: 7p–7:30a

Weekends: EOW

Holidays: every other holiday, included in perm rotation

Overnight cutoff: time worked past 7 AM counts toward next day

Certifications Required

BLS, ACLS, NIHSS

Core Nursing Exam

Ishihara Color Vision Screening

Stepdown/PCU Exam

Driver’s license required at submission

Additional Notes: Cancellation: 2 shifts per 13 week contract Only submit to one WVU facility at a time Travelers cannot work within WVU longer than 1 year
