Route Supervisor

The Route Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily waste collection operations to ensure routes are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company standards. This position provides leadership and support to drivers and route personnel, promotes a culture of safety and accountability, and serves as a key liaison between field operations, management, customers, and municipal partners.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills while ensuring operational excellence and exceptional customer service.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

Supervise daily route operations to ensure all services are completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

Maintain continuous communication with drivers and route personnel throughout the workday.

Monitor route performance using routing software, GPS tracking systems, and onboard camera technology.

Coordinate with management regarding route updates, service delays, equipment breakdowns, and operational challenges.

Manage fleet and personnel resources to recover missed stops and maintain service levels.

Assist with morning dispatch operations and coordinate vehicle movements within maintenance facilities.

Safety & Compliance

Promote and enforce a strong safety culture by leading through example and ensuring compliance with all company safety policies.

Conduct daily truck inspections and audits to verify vehicle cleanliness, safety compliance, and operational readiness.

Ensure drivers are properly equipped with required safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Complete and maintain accurate documentation for accidents, incidents, damage claims, and safety concerns.

Customer & Municipal Relations

Investigate and resolve service issues, missed collections, and customer concerns promptly and professionally.

Communicate with residents, businesses, municipalities, and township representatives as necessary.

Prepare and distribute daily exception reports for uncollected items and service interruptions.

Reporting & Administration

Maintain accurate operational records, reports, and route performance documentation.

Analyze operational challenges and implement effective solutions to improve service efficiency.

Provide regular updates and recommendations to management regarding route performance and staffing needs.

Field Support

Drive routes regularly to proactively identify service issues and opportunities for improvement.

Assist with collection activities, vehicle operation, and route coverage as needed.

Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned by management.

Qualifications

Required

High School Diploma or GED.

Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced operational environment.

Proficiency with technology, including route management systems, GPS platforms, and mobile applications.

Ability to operate company vehicles and equipment safely.

Preferred

Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory, transportation, logistics, waste management, or related operational experience.

CDL Class A or Class B License.

Previous experience managing field personnel and fleet operations.

High-visibility reflective safety vest

Work gloves

Steel-toe safety boots

Additional PPE as required by company policy

Work Environment

Combination of office, yard, and field environments.

Regular exposure to varying weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.

Exposure to refuse, dust, chemicals, solvents, and other materials associated with waste collection operations.

Exposure to moving vehicles, machinery, tools, and heavy equipment.

Physical Requirements

Ability to safely operate trucks and collection equipment.

Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, reach, and perform physical tasks for extended periods.

Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.

Ability to enter and exit vehicles frequently throughout the workday.

Ability to work outdoors and navigate uneven terrain when necessary.
