For our client, we are seeking a Associate General Counsel - Transactions to join the team of a leader in the Energy & Utilities space. This role will provide business-aligned guidance focused on governance, compliance, and operational risk management. You will partner with leaders, compliance stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to translate complex issues into practical recommendations. The position offers the opportunity to strengthen responsible execution, improve decision-making, and support sustainable growth within a Energy & Utilities environment.
Location: Columbus, OH - US based candidates only, no visa sponsorship available
Compensation: $221,489 – $287,934 annually
Responsibilities
Draft and negotiate corporate transaction agreements such as acquisitions and joint ventures
Provide legal counsel to AEP operating companies regarding transaction legal requirements and risk
Oversee a team responsible for structuring and closing M&A and commercial deals
Manage outside counsel, including budgeting and performance monitoring
Coordinate with tax, accounting, and regulatory stakeholders to manage legal risks in complex transactions
Monitor industry regulations and developments to guide business practices
Qualifications
J.D. degree with eligibility to practice in Ohio
Minimum 10 years of experience as a transactional attorney, preferably in a law firm or corporate legal department
Demonstrated experience in structuring, negotiating, and closing corporate transactions
Strong oral and written communication skills
Big picture oriented with strong attention to detail
