Description

Works with patrons to provide appropriate resources to satisfy their informational, educational, and recreational needs by means of reference interviews or reader's advisory services.

Assists in the development of a year-round programming schedule and participates in the execution of programs for youths ages 0-18.

Plans early literacy experiences both in the library and in the community to children birth to age 8 and their caregivers/teachers.

Develops and maintains collaborations with schools, community agencies, and local organizations serving youth.

Assists department manager in long range departmental planning and program development.

Adheres to a community-focused service model that fosters solid relationships with customers, community organizations, and co-workers through attention and a commitment to serve.

Recommends policies and procedures to the department manager on the operations of the Youth Services department.

Prepares reports and collects data on departmental operations for the department manager.

Assists in the acquisition of juvenile and young adult print materials to meet user demand and to provide informational resources.

Assists in the provision of programming and bibliographic data to the Marketing department for media releases and promotional materials.

Keeps current on technological advances, innovative services and procedures, and current resources through professional readings and educational opportunities.

Acts as Librarian-in-Charge as needed. Requirements

Masters of Library Science Degree from an ALA accredited institution.

Two years' experience in a public library setting.

Ability to use innovative, creative, and artistic talents in developing programming and outreach.

Experience with planning and conducting children's programs for different ages.

Knowledge of children's literature and early literacy best practices in library settings.

Must be able to demonstrate good judgment and problem-solving skills.

Must demonstrate an interest in and a genuine desire to serve children and young people.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Ability to interact with the public in a consistent, friendly, and professional manner.

Ability to work effectively in a participative management setting.

A positive attitude and willingness to learn new skills and processes as needed/as the library environment is continually changing.

Additional consideration may be given to individuals that are fluent in Spanish or Somali. COMPETENCIES

Technology: Demonstrates general understanding of basic computer skills coupled with an understanding and knowledge of library provided equipment and software including the website, databases, catalog, and ILS; the ability to troubleshoot basic technology problems.

While performing duties of job, employee typically handles office equipment, objects (books, games, puzzles, boxes, etc.), and frequently communicates with others. Work requires moderate physical exertion, including occasional bending, kneeling, stooping and standing; some lifting and moving of heavy objects/book carts (up to 20 lbs.).

The majority of the work is performed in an office setting.
