Summary of Job

Performs routine maintenance and custodial work in the care of buildings and grounds; does related work as required; may be assigned to City Hall, Senior Center, Police Department or other City buildings as required. This position requires someone who will practice discretion and be willing to maintain confidentiality. This is repetitive manual work requiring the efficient performance of building cleaning, grounds keeping duties, and minor building maintenance. Work generally is performed in accordance with established procedures and specific instructions are given on unusual and difficult assignments. Split shifts and movement between buildings may be necessary during the work period.

Responsibilities

Must maintain high level of confidentiality and discretion due to high level access to City facilities and possible confidential information

Performs custodial / maintenance activities in the upkeep of buildings including occasional repair of broken windows as well as painting tasks

Cleans and washes floors, walls, woodwork, windows, blinds, desks, counter tops, light fixtures, chalkboards, and garbage cans

Dusts sills, baseboards, desks, pictures and cabinets

Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and replenishes supplies

Empties waste baskets and other trash

Spot cleans, sweeps, dust mops and / or damp mops hard floor surfaces daily as needed

Strips and waxes floors

Vacuum clean rugs and carpets daily

Vacuum furniture and drapes as needed or instructed

Deep cleans carpeted areas with carpet extractor or other acceptable procedures

Installs window screens and storm windows

Cuts grass, trims bushes, applies fertilizers, cleans grounds of litter and other yard work as instructed

Removes snow / ice from walks, steps and parking areas using shovels and snow blowers

Moves furniture and equipment as required

Assists maintenance personnel in repairs to buildings and mechanical equipment

Turns lights on and off and secures office space as required

Changes light bulbs when flickering or burned out

Adjusts thermostats as required

Set up rooms for conferences, lectures and special events

Hangs paintings, pictures and displays

Notifies Supervisor of equipment and facilities needing repair or replacement

Must be available for call in as required

Qualifications

Education: High school graduate or GED equivalent or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Experience: Experience in general custodial work and/or a completion of a post high school course on custodial related subjects preferred.

Certifications/Licenses: Must possess a valid Wisconsin Driver's License

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Ability to follow oral and written instructions and the ability to establish and maintain working relationships with the Supervisor and fellow workers. Must have positive work attitude; pleasant personality; ability to get along with difficult people. Must understand and use Material Safety and Data Sheet information as provided by suppliers. Must be willing to work any shift as needed to properly complete desired tasks. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedures, operation and maintenance instructions, Safety Data Sheets, procedure manuals, and product labels; Ability to communicate effectively with fellow staff members and the general public. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate area, volume, and liquid dilution rates. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
