Sr. Mechanical Engineer

Major purpose: Under general supervision, the Senior Mechanical Engineer I interprets specifications and other requirements, performs complex analysis, design, plans, estimates tasks, directs the execution of detail design and ensures appropriate documentation on projects. The Senior Mechanical Engineer I evaluates and integrates cost effective design, producibility, and manufacturing practices into mechanical designs. Works directly with all engineering supporting disciplines to establish product concepts and carries ideas through final product design. Coordinates and reviews the work of designers and drafters assigned to the program. Complexity of assignments requires the exercise of considerable initiative, planning, and independent judgment.

Major functions: 1.Reviews and interprets specifications and requirements to determine structural, thermal and critical safety characteristics/considerations for mechanical designs.

2.Supports other mechanical engineers and drafters in conceptual designs and the preparation of mechanical drawings. Reviews and approves project documentation, change requests, etc.

3.Performs conceptual designs to meet project objectives, cost, and schedule.

4.Will be responsible for all phases of designs from concept through prototype manufacture and production.

5.Performs feasibility studies to reconcile project requirements with proposed designs.

6.Estimates material and labor costs for proposed designs and proposals.

7.Designs cooling systems for new and updated products.

8.Prepares and is responsible for project budget/schedule adherence.

9.Performs packaging and mechanical design of power conversion equipment.

10.Assists in cost estimates and interfaces with suppliers of components/sub-systems.

11.Conducts thermal, structural and tolerance analysis.

12.Strong knowledge of material and hardware selection including welding, fabrication practices, and machining tolerances to complete a cost-effective design. Knowledge of military and commercial standards pertaining to design, testing, hardware, material, and processes a must.

13.Interfaces with customers, vendors, and production to develop product requirements and solutions.

14.Supports the manufacturing build and qualification testing requirements as needed.

15.Responsible for maintaining Computer Aided Engineering/Design skills in support of the mechanical engineering and design functions.

Technical/Functional skills:

Education/Experience/Licenses etc.: EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree (BSME) from four-year college or university; and minimum 8 years related experience and/or training.

1.Knowledge of Navy/Military environmental qualification testing.

2.Knowledge of Mil-Specifications and contracting.

3.Skilled in finite element analysis.

4.Good communication skills.

5.Experience using 3-D CAD software tools in design function. Autodesk Inventor, or equivalent modeling software (solid modeler) experience a must.

6.Able to obtain DOD security clearance.

The manager is looking for:

•MUST be able and willing to work with the team!

•Experience packaging high power electronics

•Thermal experience

•Analytical background

•3D CAD fluency is also a must along with experience with complex systems

The ideal candidate would also have:

•Familiarity with Military specifications.

•Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) experience with Agile PLM, Windchill PLM, or other PLM system.

•MIL-DTL-23200 for Navy designs

•Electronics Packaging – this is a requirement for ME III and up for me. – ME III and up

•Recent 3d CAD experience (strong preference is Inventor) – ME II and up

•PLM experience (preferred, but not mandatory) – ME II and up

•Able to read basic schematics (preferred, but not mandatory) – ME II and up

•Tolerance Analysis – Preferred for ME II and ME III

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.


Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.


Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
