The Substitute role is vital to ensuring the operational excellence of each school by assuming the duties of teachers and staff when they are absent from work. Substitutes can work as often as they would like, on a regular or intermittent schedule. We welcome substitutes to work in our schools every day and we incentivize regular work. Substitutes are needed for teachers, paraeducators, kitchen staff, instructional support team members, custodians, bus assistants, and front office staff. While we encourage substitutes to work at all of our BRSU schools, you may request to work at specific buildings. SCHOOLS:

Substitute - General: $17.75/hour
Substitute - SPED Special Programs: $20.00/hour (ANCHOR, RISE, SAIL, Life Skills, Therapeutic School Programs Only; Requires specific training and SPED Director Approval)
Substitute - School Nurse: $22.00 per hour. A valid and current Vermont nursing license is required (RN/LPN) Additional Compensation:
Substitutes will be paid a stipend based on the number of days worked during the school year. The stipend will be paid in July 2027, after all hours have been processed for the school year.
Stipends are calculated as follows:
After 20 days worked, the stipend will be $100 plus $1.00 per hour for all additional hours worked beyond the first 20 days.
After 45 days worked, the stipend will increase to $1.75 per hour for all additional hours worked beyond the first 45 days.
After 70 days worked, the stipend will increase to $2.50 per hour for all additional hours worked beyond the first 70 days.
Only substitute hours will be considered for the stipend. Hours worked as a temporary employee filing a limited-term position, or hours worked in an additional scheduled assignment, will not be applicable to the stipend.
A day is considered to be fulfilled after 7 hours of work. If a substitute has filled partial day positions they will be summed to calculate full days of work applicable to the stipend.
The stipend will be forfeited if frequent cancellation of accepted jobs occurs.
