Discover • Define • Develop™ Internship
From Purpose to Direction to Real-World Growth
The Discover • Define • Develop™ Internship is designed to help individuals align who they are with what they do.
Built from the themes presented in STEP INTO SELF (THEORY) and structured using the internship framework model of the Voice Up® Career Pathway system, this internship focuses on helping participants:
discover their authentic strengths and purpose
define meaningful direction and goals
develop the habits, communication skills, and leadership abilities needed for long-term success
The Foundation
Most people spend years pursuing careers, goals, and expectations that do not align with who they truly are.
This internship is built on a different approach:
Discover who you are.
Define where you are going.
Develop the skills and discipline to grow.
The program combines:
self-reflection
communication development
mentorship
leadership growth
structured personal and professional development
Why Purpose Matters
Research across psychology, leadership, and workforce development consistently shows that individuals with a strong sense of purpose experience:
greater motivation and resilience
improved focus and decision-making
stronger communication skills
higher long-term career satisfaction
greater adaptability during change
Without clarity and purpose, people often experience burnout, disconnection, and inconsistency.
With alignment, individuals communicate more effectively, lead more confidently, and contribute more meaningfully.

The distinction matters. There is a long tradition in American educational discourse of framing equity and excellence as competing values — as though widening access necessarily means diluting what you are widening access to. Fuller rejects this framing entirely. What he proposes is closer to what happens when a master craftsperson takes on an apprentice: the standards do not drop; the process becomes visible. The drafts, the doubts, the revisions, the conversations that reshape an idea entirely — all of it is shown, not hidden. The mystification is removed. The work remains.
What Universities of Practice Actually Are
The intellectual infrastructure behind the book draws on the concept of a University of Practice — a learning environment defined not by the credentials it confers but by the quality of participation it invites. The term is Fuller's own, developed in parallel with the Voice Up ecosystem over several years of applied work with learners across multiple settings. Its philosophical roots are visible: Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger's foundational work on situated learning, which argued that knowledge is not transmitted from teacher to student but rather emerges through participation in authentic communities of practice, runs as a quiet current beneath the whole project.
