The Pipeline That Begins Before the Pipeline
The conventional discourse about the research pipeline focuses on outcomes: enrollment figures, retention rates, degrees conferred, demographics of who publishes and who does not. Fuller is not uninterested in these outcomes. But his argument is that they are downstream of something that receives almost no attention: the moment, usually in childhood, when a person either learns that their questions are worth pursuing or learns to stop asking them.
He writes about children — all children, he insists — as natural researchers. They test ideas constantly. They form theories without embarrassment. They ask why again and again, not because they expect an answer but because the question itself has become interesting. Somewhere along the educational continuum, this impulse is trained into compliance. Questions become inefficient. Uncertainty looks like weakness.
