“The students were not missing from the pipeline because they lacked preparation. They were missing because no institution had ever connected what they already knew and did to a recognized professional pathway.”

Fuller calls this the Definitional Intervention. It took, on average, two minutes. Two minutes — a definition, read aloud, from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services — produced a shift in how eleven students understood themselves and their futures. The effect held across institution types, geographic regions, age ranges, and academic disciplines. The students did not need more resources, or different advisors, or better programs. They needed language.

Ninety-one percent of the participants were already providing substantial peer support to people in their lives — listening, advising, de-escalating, accompanying people through depression and anxiety and grief and trauma. Half held formal campus support roles. Zero of them, before the interview, identified those behaviors as behavioral health competencies. Zero of them had ever been told, by any institution, that the work they were already doing was the core skill of the profession they were being asked to consider.
