Database Engineer (Mid-Level) – On-Site, Washington DC
Location: Washington, DC (On-site, 5 days/week)
Clearance: Active Public Trust required (DOJ Public Trust preferred)
Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship required + minimum 3 years of U.S. residency
Contract: 6 months with possible extension
On-Call: Required (primarily for incident support)
Hours: Standard 40-hour work week
Role Overview
We are seeking a Mid-Level Database Engineer to support mission-critical database environments across Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL. The role involves managing and optimizing databases across Linux, Windows, AWS, and on-prem environments, supporting modernization initiatives, ensuring reliability, and driving performance improvements. This position works closely with development, infrastructure, and security teams.
Key Responsibilities
Support and standardize enterprise-wide Configuration Management Database (CMDB).
Install, configure, and maintain Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL across cloud and on-prem systems.
Configure new databases, servers, and related infrastructure.
Manage replication, clustering, and high-availability setups.
Perform performance tuning, root-cause analysis, and optimization.
Apply Quarterly Patch Set Updates (PSUs) for Oracle/MySQL.
Lead database upgrades, patching, migrations, and refreshes.
Support AWS DMS, cloud modernization, and automation initiatives.
Monitor performance metrics and proactively resolve bottlenecks.
Execute and validate database backups and ensure SLA compliance.
Maintain baseline activities, snapshots, and monthly maintenance.
Troubleshoot deadlocks, slow queries, indexing issues, and integrity checks.
Manage user roles, permissions, and enforce security policies.
Implement and monitor encryption, vulnerability fixes, and audit logs.
Participate in DR testing, failover exercises, and backup validation.
Provide on-call production support when required.
Conduct AWS R&D to support new tools and automation improvements.
Maintain detailed documentation and generate performance/growth reports.
Collaborate with application, infrastructure, and security stakeholders.
️ Required Technical Skills
Certifications in Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL Administration.
Strong hands-on experience with Oracle/MySQL/PostgreSQL on Linux & Windows.
Proficiency with AWS database services (RDS, EC2-hosted databases).
Expertise in installation, configuration, tuning, and maintenance.
Strong skills in backup/restore, DR planning, and failover testing.
Ability to troubleshoot using execution plans and performance metrics.
Understanding of security controls, encryption, audit logging, and remediation.
Experience with monitoring and database automation tools.
Ability to support production databases with on-call responsibilities.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Skills
Experience deploying/managing databases across AWS, on-prem, and hybrid environments.
Database migration, upgrades, and replication experience.
SQL optimization, query tuning, and index management.
Participation in monthly maintenance, patching cycles, and DR tests.
Strong documentation practices.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
Up to 2 years of relevant experience (per role classification).
Must hold or obtain a Public Trust clearance.
Must work 100% on-site in Washington, DC.
