Resume:

May *, ****

To Whom It May Concern:

I am an individual that is unique; my resume is not the usual one that comes across your desk. Few people have 3 coveted Texas health care licenses (DC, RN, NP-C). This is my accomplishments of 20 + years of experiences and 13 years of college. I am looking to relocate immediately to Houston, TX or possibly San Antonio, TX.

I did not return to the university setting for the grueling academic setting of 6 years to treat coughs, colds, hypertension, diabetes, etc. I did it so I could work for a specialist in the field of orthopedics, neurosurgery, pain management, occupational medicine, physical medicine, or rheumatology. I would also consider the field of Men’s Health or weight loss clinic. I would like a job that has financial incentives for performance if possible.

A professional resume is not enough for me to present myself and that is why I am enclosing this detailed cover letter. An applicant should show an employer what they did specifically to be successful for their last employer. How they built that business up, and most importantly why they wanted to build it and what both employer and employee can get out of it.

The below does not apply to this postion very much but it shows the drive and character I have to learn and excel at whatever I put my mind to.

Here are some things that set me apart from others.

First and foremost:

Management Experience

o My practice management coach asked me once, “Do you want to continue to be the talented healthcare provider and grow slowly at best or find and train other talented healthcare providers and be the leader of good talent so you can double or triple your efficiency and income?” Take home point is simple, “Failing to plan is planning to fail”! I was taught to write my personal and practice goals and post them on my bathroom mirror and behind my office door. It worked! If your goals are not written down and posted the saying, “Out of site is out of mind” should come into mind. A single care health care provider is limited by the hours on a clock; with multiple healthcare providers time can be expanded. As all healthcare providers and business owners know, Time is money! I was able to train other healthcare providers so my business expanded exponentially.

o Starting, owning and operating a multimillion-dollar a year practice with no business partners for over two decades. This practice consisted primarily of therapy with no Medicare or Medicaid patients.

o Managed 35 employees, including a pain management doctor, 2 part time general practitioners, physical therapist, occupational therapist, chiropractors and a part time psychologist.

o Created and maintained a paperless office system.

o Hired Fortune Practice Management consultant. Learned to embrace the TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) approach. A physician’s staff will either make or break the practice. High turnover, poorly motivated staff or employee’s with low morale is a practice killer. Leadership comes from the top. Leading by example showing the staff how much a doctor cares about his patients is paramount. Leadership is hard to do if the doctor is in exam rooms all day. Having an office manager that holds staff accountable is key. A staff member should be able to answer any question about the status of their job or a project instantly or within a few moments and have the objective proof to prove it. Long wait times in the waiting room or exam room or rescheduling to do frequent “emergencies” shows poor staffing, scheduling or planning. The clinic needs to be able to continue to make money when the doctor owner is not there by having a great mid-level provider.

o Chairperson for the monthly - day meeting with the entire staff at a local hotel, which included lunch. The meetings were amazing as each staff member had to present information to the entire staff and having many pairs of eyes and ears listening to what patient’s say about the practice was sometimes “brutal” it helped improve the practice tremendously.

o Ability to motivate staff to achieve clinic goal’s by helping them achieve their personal goals and provide them with vacation incentives. These incentives included taking me taking my entire staff and their significant other to Cancun, Mexico and Las Vegas, NV twice. Package included airfare, hotel, shows, and meals. Took my office manger and her husband to Paris, France and my computer programmer and his wife to St. Thomas, USVI.

o Objectively improving patient outcomes and satisfaction through implementation of different strategies.

o Formulating, implementing and controlling the budget by reviewing past trends in expenses and collections.

o Capital acquisition for equipment after evaluating the ROI.

o Hiring licensed health care professionals.

o Overseeing accounting and payroll practices and planning tax-reducing strategies with tax attorney.

o Dealing with sales, advertising and marketing representatives.

o Complying with HIPAA & OSHA rules.

o Successful plan that reduced work comp injuries at the office by 50% in one year and 75% by the second year.

Legal & Work Compensation Experience

o Took a personal injury case that was going to be settled for $15,000 after the plaintiff’s orthopedic surgeon, two radiologists, and a pain management expert gave their opinions. I went against all the “experts” as I have extensive training in personal injury cases and came up with the correct diagnosis. The case was settled for 2.1 million dollars.

o Testified in court or at a deposition as expert witness for at least 10 personal injury cases with favorable outcome in 9/10 cases.

o Represented my clinic legally and also testified as expert witness in the TDI- Worker’s Compensation arena for over 250 cases (BRC, CCH, or SOAH)

o Presented case to ALJ’s at SOAH on RTW programs and CP programs and I won all of them.

o Won $50,000 dollars that was paid by Texas Mutual Insurance Company (the largest work comp carrier in Texas) primarily for Aquatic Therapy at a SOAH hearing. The entire story is too long to tell here.

o Class Action lead plaintiff that resulted in 50 work comp insurance that lead them to pay millions in back interest to doctors. In the state of Texas now, all work compensation claims paid late are with interest automatically now as a result of me.

o Spoke to Peer Review doctor’s on regular basis for approval of care on ODG guidelines.

Software Experience

o Helped create specialized software that allowed insurance staff to prepare worker’s compensation medical disputes packages and appeals to SOAH with a step-by-step questionnaire.

o Helped create many templates that gauged practice and helped prepare decisions on clinic budget.

o Helped create initial and re-exam software that produces 5-15 page typed reports.

o Helped create software for daily SOAP notes.

Construction Experience

o I built my own building. I had no prior construction experience except for working in our large family owned steel and erection business for a year after high school. I learned not one contractor in the entire South Texas wanted to even bid on my building project due my requirement of having a junior Olympic swimming pool inside the office. This was due to the liability of mold. I then put it up for the bidding process a second month and the bids I got were $400,000 over my budget. I decided that if my dream was to be done, I was going to have to do it myself. It was truly a “labor of love” project. I as the contractor for a 12,400 square foot building started with nearly no experience. It was the largest privately built medical office in Cameron County at the time. The junior Olympic 77,000 gallon indoor heated swimming pool was built first then the building on top of it. I spent 9 hours a day on the job site with a hard hat on for 9 months. It was truly my “baby”. This was done after I saved $200,000 in cash the year before I started to put the required equity into the building. I hired another doctor to run my clinic during the day and I worked another 2 hours every night with my office manager reviewing things that happened at the office and to ensure what I had built up did not slide down while I was gone. I had a re-occurring thought in my head from the first day I thought of doing the project. It was from a famous movie “Field of Dreams”…Build it and people will come! They came!

I am looking for an employer who has the foresight (Perception of the significance and nature of events before they have occurred) to utilize me and has or is willing to work with me on coming up with a plan to benefit both of us tremendously. One must have a written plan for success and objective benchmarks to judge the success of it. This must be done so that alterations can be made to correct the plan if it is not working. “Failing to plan is a plan to fail”!

I have been extremely successful in all of my professional endeavors. I started and completed the entire 6-year nursing program in 3 years. I went to multiple colleges and doubled up on my classes at the same time while maintaining a very high GPA throughout my professional academic nursing endeavors.

I have an overachiever personality and I am excellent with patients. I think I have put down just a few things that will hopefully catch your attention. I am an honest person because of my excellent upbringing and I don’t like people who are dishonest or play games.

I know you have one question for me after reading this letter. I will answer it in person.

Every office is unique and I hope that we can find a way for us to increase your practice or meet other goals you may have. I am not looking for just a salaried job as most midlevel’s are. I am looking also looking for financial incentives so that we both are rewarded financially substantially.

If you have any suggestions, comments or questions, do not hesitate to call me at 956-***-****. I am currently working for a rheumatologist in South Texas but he is not able to give me a contract at this time. Therefore, I am looking to relocate to Houston, TX.

Professionally,

Robert S. Howell, NP-C, RN, MSN, DC
