Project: Changes in Bulk Insurance

Client Royal Bank of Canada (RBC)

Role: Systems Analyst – Testing (Lead &Onsite Co-ordinator, RBC-CANADA)

Brief description of the project:

Securitization forms an integral part of RBC’s core funding strategy. Any conventional mortgage RBC wants to securitize within CMHC’s NHA MBS program needs to be bulk/block/portfolio/post facto insured.

OLMS/ADMIN system has a bulk insurance indicator field to identify which conventional mortgage is bulk insured by which mortgage insurer (MI). This indicator, however, was being changed to a default value “CMHC” when RBC securitized all mortgage types by selling them from RBC to a third-party through an MBS sales process. This change in the bulk insurance indicator resulted in incorrect reporting and tracking within RBC databases of bulk insured mortgages and the underlying MI. Furthermore, the bulk insurance indicator does not revert back to its original value when the mortgage is repurchased by RBC. In order to reduce operational and reputational risks associated with the reporting and securitization of bulk insured mortgages this initiative proposes to retain the correct MI value in the bulk insurance indicator field throughout the life of the mortgage. Also, a one time correction of the bulk insurance indicator is applied to all existing mortgages that were ever securitized/sold.
