I began my career at the USW as a college intern, working as a video production assistant in the Communications Department, viewing archival footage within the department’s video library for various productions, logging over 1,300 videotapes into an Access database, and duplicating audio and videotapes. I coordinated video shoots, set up video equipment as needed, and assisted as production coordinator for location shoots. After graduating from IUP I accepted a clerical position in the same department. Besides performing all necessary clerical functions listed above, I created a mass e-mail distribution list which was used for the delivery of press releases to over 600 media outlets across the U. S. and Canada.
While working in the Local Union Services Department, I was responsible for daily updates to the membership and local union officers’ records using Oracle applications, and worked on the local union elections.
I had the opportunity to work in the Organizing Department and attending a training session at Linden Hall dealing with effective methods to organize new members.
After becoming a permanent employee I was transferred to the Rapid Response Department. In addition to the required clerical duties, I worked on the Ed O’Brien for Congress campaign, going door-to-door to “Get Out the Vote,” attended the FTAA Ministerial in Miami, FL to participate in protests against the free trade agreements, and coordinated registration for over 2,000 delegates to the annual Rapid Response conferences.
Before relocating to North Carolina in 2010 I was assigned to the Communications Department for several years. Besides routine clerical responsibilities I assisted the USW@Work editor by coordinating interview schedules and transcribing verbal interviews. A large portion of time was spent proofreading copy for the USW@Work and other USW publications designed in the department prior to printing. I created the department’s photo archive library, which entailed cataloging pictures from over a decade of Steelabor/USW@Work editions. In addition to handling media inquiries, I had access to the USW e-mail lists for the distribution of press releases.
