SUMMARY

• 999

• Broad genomics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and physiology experience from creating and analyzing animal model in support of drug development.

• Participate in strategic planning for program advancement.

• Excellent organizational, interpersonal and presentation skills; extensive experience in mentoring peer scientists.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Oct.2011-Present

Adjunct Instructor of Biology

Lone Star College System

Biology Department

The Woodlands, TX 77384

2005- Feb.2011

Sr. Scientist

Department of Metabolism Research

Lexicon Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

The Woodlands, TX 77381

Reporting directly to the V.P. of the Metabolism department, I planned and conducted experiments using various techniques such as measurement of energy expenditure/consumption using indirect calorimetry, evaluation of gross motor activity and circadian rhythms for program progression. Managed metabolism programs from prioritization through the generation of experimental data and presented the results at jointpartner meetings with our pharmaceutical collaborators.

• Directly contributed to metabolism programs in support of drug pharmacology and development, including:

o mechanism of action of novel anti-obesity and diabetic drugs.

o proof of concept, mode of action, lead optimization, and clinical candidate selection.

• Identified and advanced 5 projects to advanced research programs.

• Develop project prioritization by analyzing genotype-phenotype correlation of over 50 novel genes.

• Conducted routine endocrinology assays, body composition analysis using DEXA and QMR techniques, oGTT, insulin ELISA, and mouse and rat compound dosing.

• Created rational het/het or het/het/het phenotypes for testing the hypothesis that partial inhibition of multiple kinases in the same pathway can produce a valued biologic response with potentially less toxicity.

• Established hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp in conscious mice.

1999-2005 Sr. Scientific Group Leader

Molecular Genetics Department

Lexicon Genetics, Inc.

The Woodlands, TX 77381

As Scientific Group Leader I participate in building and management of the Molecular Genetics Department, the only revenue generating department in the company. I supervised and managed curation of over hundreds knockout mouse production programs from three scientific team leaders. The efforts of my group helped Lexicon establish one of the largest collections of custom mouse mutations for pharmaceutically relevant drug targets in the world.

• Custom designed mouse mutations in an effort to evaluate the biotherapeutic value of a large array of genes potentially important as drug targets.

• Completed and delivered to alliance partners projects with knockout mice, within tight timelines.

• As a member of the drug discovery research committee, participated in drug target prioritization by mining genomic databases and curating over fifty projects for target validation by knockout mouse phenotype analysis.

• Designed new targeting vector technology and a new positive/negative selection strategy

1995-1999 Senior Postdoctoral Fellow

Department of Biochemistry

Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX 77030

Principal investigator: Professor G. Eichele

• Investigated pattern formation in limb development using chicken embryo as model.

• Investigated the ability of BMP-2 to direct limb patterning by creating zone of polarization (ZPA)-free wing buds.

1993-1995 Postdoctoral Fellow

Department of Medical Biochemistry, CMU

University of Geneva, Switzerland

Postdoctoral advisor: Professor J-P Giacobino

• Investigated the role of beta3 adrenergic receptor (Adrb3) function in energy balance, body fat accumulation, diet, and feeding behavior with Adrb3-knockout mice.

1989-1993 Graduate research assistant

Department of Medical Biochemistry, CMU

University of Geneva, Switzerland

Thesis mentor: Professor J-P Giacobino

Thesis title: “Molecular characterization of Beta3-adrenergic receptor in mouse”

• Cloned a novel beta-adrenergic receptor, Adrb3, from rat brown adipose tissue, where it controls thermogenesis and lipolysis.
